Russian Defense Ministry already ordered third-generation combat gear Ratnik-3
The Russian Defense Ministry ordered a third-generation soldier combat gear to be designed to replace the Ratnik in due time, Dmitry Semizorov, director general of Russian defense contractor TsNIITochmash, told the Russian news agency TASS on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2015.

"The large-scale delivery and operational test and evaluation of the Ratnik second-generation soldier combat gear are under way, and the Defense Ministry has already tasked us with researching into a third-generation soldier combat gear dubbed Ratnik-3," Semizorov said.

According to him, once the research has been completed, a decision will be made as to the direction for the development work on the kit to follow. "I mean our job now boils down to laying the groundwork in terms of materials and research into improved ballistics of the weapon [organic to the Ratnik]," the TsNIITochmash director general added.

According to Semizorov, the current research includes the seeking for advanced ballistic solutions to extend the weapon’s range and armor penetration capability. He added that the new combat gear would be much lighter and more effective and will feature a higher manufacturability. In addition, an exoskeleton might be introduced into it.

"There have been technical solutions as far as the exoskeleton is concerned; for this reason, we are looking into the feasibility of introducing it into the combat gear. The introduction of an unmanned aerial vehicle is being pondered too," he said.

Andrei Grigoryev, head of the Advanced Research Foundation, says the foundation has teamed up with TsNIITochmash, working on an improved variant of the ‘future soldier’s’ combat gear. The work is to be completed by 2025-2030.
