Russia is implementing a contract for the supplies of T-90S main battle tanks (MBTs) to Iraq, the press office of the Federal Service for Military and Technical Cooperation (FSVTS) told TASS at Dubai Airshow 2017. The T-90S is the export version of the T-90 MBT. The first prototype of the T-90 was produced in 1989 and serial production started in 1992.

"The contract is being implemented according to the schedule agreed by the parties," it said.

FSVTS Director Dmitry Shugaev earlier said a major contract for the supplies of armored hardware had been signed with Iraq. He did not disclose the type of the hardware and delivery time.

Some few months ago, Russian Company Uralvagonzavod has announced that Iraq has purchased 73 main battle tanks (MBTs) including T-90S MBTs and T-90SK command post for a tank battalion unit.

The T-90S entered in service with the Russian army in 1992 and in February 2001 the Indian Army signed a contract to purchase 310 T-90S main battle tanks. The T-90S is manufactured by the Russian Company Uralvagonzavod based in Nizhnyi Tagil, Russia.

The T-90S is armed with one 125mm 2A46M smoothbore gun able to fire standard ammunition as APDS (Armour Piercing Discarding Sabot), HEAT (high-explosive anti-tank), HE-FRAG (high-explosive fragmentation), but also the 9M119 Refleks (NATO designation AT-11 Sniper) anti-tank guided missile.

The T-90S tank is protected by both conventional armour-plating and explosive reactive armour (ERA). The T-90S is fitted with the Shtora-1 defensive aids suite which is produced by Electronintorg of Russia. This system includes infrared jammer, laser warning system with four laser warning receivers, grenade discharging system which produces an aerosol screen and a computerized control system.
