Indonesia and India would like to develop defence cooperation between the two countries.
Indonesian Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro and visiting Indian Defense Minister Shri AK Antony met here on Tuesday, October 16, 2012, to seek further defense cooperation between the two countries. "I expect this bilateral meeting would improve our cooperation in the defense sector to higher level," Purnomo said in his remarks to welcome his Indian counterpart and his entourage.

Antony said that India and Indonesia are two neighboring countries that have long history of good bilateral relations.

"I expect that through closer defense cooperation, India and Indonesia would play greater role in maintaining peace and security both in the region and in the Asia level," he said.

During the meeting, Purnomo invited India to take part in the Counter Terrorism Exercise of the ASEAN Defense Minister Meeting Plus slated for September next year in Indonesia.

Defense cooperation between India and Indonesia was officially enacted in a strategic partnership pact established in 2005. The pact constitutes military of both countries to take part in cooperation implemented in various programs.

Senior defense ministry officials and top brass military officers of the two countries have made periodical meetings in a forum called Indonesia-India Joint Defense Cooperation Committee
