Bittium (former Elektrobit) continues the development of the Bittium Tactical Wireless IP Network (TAC WIN) system in cooperation with the Finnish Defence Forces. Bittium has received a purchase order from the Finnish Defence Forces for further development of the waveform of the software-defined radio based Bittium TAC WIN system. Bittium Tactical Wireless IP Network (TAC WIN) is a wireless broadband network system intended for military and public safety use.

Due to the software-based functionality of the Bittium TAC WIN system, it can be easily updated with additional performance cost-efficiently during the whole lifespan of the system. The purchase order is continuation to the delivery contract signed between Bittium and the Finnish Defence Forces in September 2011 and to the related product deliveries that began in December 2012 and continued after an additional purchase order received in July 2014. In accordance with the delivery contract, Bittium is developing the Bittium TAC WIN system for the Finnish Defence Forces and delivers software-defined radios that are the basis for the Bittium TAC WIN system. The now ordered work package will be delivered to the Finnish Defence Forces during the first half of the year 2016.

“The long-span cooperation between Bittium and the Finnish Defence Forces with the Bittium TAC WIN system has enabled continuous development of the system both for the needs of the Finnish Defence Forces and also for the international markets. Using the software-defined technology we are able to continuously develop the features of our system, thus enabling that our customers have the best possible usability, data transfer capacity and mobility for the changing needs on the battlefield”, says Harri Romppainen, Vice President of Defense at Bittium.

Bittium Tactical Wireless IP Network (TAC WIN) is a wireless broadband network system intended for military and public safety use. With the system MANET (mobile ad hoc network), link, and connection networks can be formed into one logical IP network quickly, no matter what the location is. It is compatible with existing fixed and wireless network infrastructures. The core of the system is a software-defined radio based tactical router, which is versatile, easily adaptable to different needs and can be easily updated with software for future needs. With the tactical router users can freely form both wired and wireless broadband data transfer connections. The system comprises also three types of radio heads, and each radio head covers its own frequency band area and can be used for flexible formation of different network topologies for different communication needs. All the products of the system are designed for harsh conditions, and thanks to the system's automated functions the implementation of the system can be done quickly.

The value of the received purchase order is EUR 2.0 million (excl. VAT). The order has no significant impact on Bittium's net sales, operating result or financial standing, and it has also no effect on Bittium's financial outlook for the year 2015, published on August 6, 2015 in Bittium's Interim Report January-June 2015. The Finnish Defence Forces have also issued a purchase option for possible additional development of the Bittium TAC WIN waveform, and it is valued at EUR 1.1 million (excl. VAT).
