KamAZ starts manufacturing new KAMAZ-53949 Typhoon 4x4 MRAP
KamAZ starts manufacturing a new mine-resistant ambush protected vehicle KAMAZ-53949, a source in the defense industry told TASS at the Interpolitex-2015 exhibition. "Series production began of the new KAMAZ-53949 Typhoon mine-resistant vehicles," he informed without disclosing the amount of production and the customers for the vehicle.

The KAMAZ-53949 4x4 wheel-drive vehicle comes from the family of Typhoon mine-resistant armored combat vehicles developed by the Kamaz truck maker for the Russian Defense Ministry and law enforcement agencies.

Unlike the Typhoon-K with a 6x6 wheel-drive, the KAMAZ-53949 has a conventional layout. Its unladen weight is 14,000 kg. The 350 hp engine enables the vehicle to move at a maximum speed of up to 105 km/h. The armored vehicle’s climbing angle is 31 degrees. The KAMAZ-53949 crew and assault force numbers a total of 10. The vehicle can be fitted with different fighting modules, including remotely operated ones.

The KAMAZ-53949 is able to carry a payload of 3,000 kg and provides a protection Level 3 Stanag 4569. The KAMAZ-53949 provides mine protection up to 8kg TNT for a blast under the bottom and any wheel.

The vehicle has a total weight around 14,000 kg and is motorized with 325 hp. engine coupled to 6-speed automatic transmission. The 4x4 Typhoon-K can be equipped with a remotely-controlled weapon station armed with a light or heavy machine gun up to 14.5 mm caliber.
