Technical Data

Armament
The BTR-80 is fitted with a one-man turret armed with one 14.5 mm KPVT heavy machine gun. The turret can rotate on 360° and be elevated from +60º to -4°. A bank of six 81 mm smoke grenade dischargers can be mounted at the rear of the turret which can create a smokescreen up to 30 m wide and 10 m high depending on the strength and direction of the wind. The latest variants can be also armed with a PKTM 7.62mm coaxial machine gun. The armament sighting system is manual. The fire control system includes a dual magnification day sight and x5.5 night sight.
Design and protection
The hull and the turret are made in all-welded steel armor which provides protection against small arms firing of 7.62 AP ammunition at a range of 100 m for the front and 750 m for the other sides of the vehicle. The BTR-80 can carry seven infantrymen, along with a crew of three, consisting of a commander, gunner and driver. The commander and driver each have a single hatch on top of the hull. A single door is mounted on each side of the hull between the second and third wheels, the upper part of which opens to the front while the lower part folds down to form a step. There are also three firing ports on each side of the hull, and one at the front right side. The front and the two forward-firing ports are designed to be used with the PK 7.62mm machine gun, while the other firing ports will be used with the AK--74 or AKM assault rifle.
Mobility
The BTR-80 is motorized with a V-8 KamAZ-7403 V-8 turbocharged diesel developing 260 hp. or YaMZ-238M2 V-8 turbocharged diesel developing 240 hp. coupled to a manual transmission with 5 forward and one reverse gears. The BTR-80 uses a four-axle’s chassis with torsion bar suspension and hydraulic shock absorbers. The BTR-80 can run at a maximum road speed of 80 Km/h with a maximum road range endurance of 600 km. The BTR-80 can climb a slope with up to 60% gradient, a vertical step of 0.5 m, and cross a trench of 2 m.
Accessories
Standard equipment of the BTR-80 includes an NBC (nuclear, biological, chemical) protection system, automatic firefighting system, camouflage devices, bilge pumps, and a 4-6 tones self-recovery winch mounted at the front of the hull. The BTR-80 is fully amphibious and propelled in the water at a maximum speed of 10 km/h by a single water jet mounted at the rear of the hull. Before entering the water the trim vane is erected at the front of the vehicle, the drain valves are closed and locked, the tire pressure is lowered and the cover over the water-jet system is opened. One searchlight OU-3GA2M is mounted on the top of the turret.
