The groundbreaking new Oribi medium sized utility truck (MUT) was exclusively
launched by DCD Protected Mobility – a leader in the design, development
and manufacture of special purpose tactile wheeled vehicles - at the
2014 AAD Expo, which was held in Pretoria from 17 to 21st September
2014. The Oribi – designed and manufactured as part of a joint
venture between medium to heavy duty vehicle customisation expert Histomart
and DCD Protected Mobility – boasts a perfect balance between
off-road capability, on-road comfort and operational efficiency. AAD
was selected as the ideal platform to launch the Oribi, as it is recognised
the largest exhibition of air, sea and land capabilities on the African
continent, and one of the world's premier aerospace and defence events.
This multi-role truck is built around an adaptive modular space frame
cab and chassis, utilising tubular profile which provide torsional stiffness
for moving heavy loads over rough terrain. Its powerful turbo diesel
engine and permanent 4x4 driveline, in combinaison with its large wheels
and low range, ensure that the truck can deal effectively with difficult
terrain, wether it is deep sand, heavy mud or steep slopes. Three power
output options are available to transmit power through either a manual
or automatic transmission on all models. |

The chassis
was designed and developed specifically for use in extreme
conditions. The cab is constructed from a high strength steel
tubular space frame and can withstand in excess of 5G loads.
The drive consists of well proven off-the-shelf components
well known for their reliability under harsh conditions. These
sub-systems have been meticulously designed to create a truck
which has been tested to destruction to achieve its reliability
while encountering extreme condition. The compact layout of
the truck (cab-over-engine) configuration and the choice of
three different wheel base lengths provides for a versatile
platform that can accommodate a wide variety of customer payloads.
These include i.a. cargo with crane and troop carrier. The
cab is available in three versions: a single cab three seater,
a double cab six seater and an open top two seater. Oribi's
protection consists of bearing type frame, with two longitudinal
frame rails joined by two welded cross members forming a solid
compact structure. Moreover, Oribi's bush protection kit includes
window protection, fuel tank shield and engine and transmission
sump guards/ Enhanced armour is available with optional ballistic
protection kits. to transmit power through either a manual
or automatic transmission on all models.

Mobility |
Oribi's
power train is an Iveco F1CE3481C 4 cylinder turbo diesel, which
develops up to 150kW. There are two possible speed boxes, the
ZF S-400 6 speed manual or the Allison SP1000 5 speed automatic.
Good power to weight ratio of 25kW/ton allows a max speed of
100km/h and a range up to 600km. The Oribi conquers various
rough terrains with an impressive maximum summit angle of 35
degrees, a maximum surmountable slope of 45 degrees, a front
approach angle of 48 degrees, a rear approach angle of 44 degrees
and a maximum fording depth of 900 mm. |
Accessories |
Adaptive
modular cab and space allow DCD to present several options,
which can give Oribi multiple roles: troop carrier, cargo carrier,
cargo with cranes, tanker with pump, ambulance, fire fighting
and mobile weapon platform.
