At
AAD 2014, the Africa Aerospace and Defense Exhibition, BAE Systems has
launched the latest addition to its RG series of mine protected vehicles,
the RG21. The new RG21 combines the battle proven protection of the
RG series — in service in many theatres around the world —
with the maturity of a commercially available host vehicle driveline,
running gear, and electronics. Starting from a commercial vehicle, the
host vehicle has been evaluated and customised with the support and
experience of Iveco Defence Vehicles, resulting in a cost-effective
vehicle with enhanced maintainability and reliability. The RG21 Can
be air transported in a C130 (with preparation).

Armament |
The roof
interface can be configured for various weapon systems such
as a manual turret, remote turret, smoke launchers, cupola
or seated one man turret. At AAD 2014, the RG21 was fitted
with the SD-ROW (Self-Defence Remotely Operated Weapon) armed
with a 7.62mm machine gun. The system can be operated by one
crew member from under or behind cover. The SD-ROW is a self-defence
system designed for simple installation onto logistic transport
carriers, lighter attack vehicles, such as BAE Systems' RG
vehicle series, and other MPVs (Mine Protected Vehicles).
For easy operation in a typical truck cabin, the SD-ROW operator
manipulates the turret and fires the weapon using a simple
Human Machine Interface (HMI), consisting of a unique control
interface with an integrated display (similar to a game console).
The HMI unit can be stowed and is portable, enabling the driver
or co-driver to operate the SD-ROW. Real-time video received
from the cameras on the weapon station is displayed to the
operator overlaying information digitally. Fixed ballistic
aiming lines are displayed to help the operator compensate
for distance with the aiming point moving according to the
selected distance. The system has a typical 10 - 600 m application
distance resulting in a very low trajectory for 7.62 mm and
5.56 mm calibre ammunition.

Design
& Protection |
The
RG21 layout is conventional, with the engine at the front, commander
(left) and driver (right) and troop compartment at the rear.
The RG21 provides users with a modular interior layout due to
the interchangeable mounting rail system. The wide range of
mission interfaces available in the vehicle allows end users
the opportunity to reconfigure the base vehicle for different
roles with kits. The RG21 also features superior protection
levels of 21 kg under any wheel and 14 kg under the hull. The
armour of the RG21 provides ballistic protection all-around
against firing of small weapons 7.62x51mm caliber NATO and 7.62X39mm
AK, 5.56x45mm SS109 Ball. The RG21 can carry a total of 12 military
personnel including driver and commander. Two large bulletproof
windows are provided for the front, sides of the RG21 and these
provide the same degree of protection as the hull. The RG21
can be easily re-configured for different missions due to the
modular interior layout facilitated by the rail mounting system
allowing repositioning of seats, radio racks, stretcher brackets
and C4I equipment. Crew and troops enter and leave the vehicle
via door at the rear of the vehicle which opens to the right.
Two large windows are mounted on each side of the vehicle with
four firing ports. In option, the RG21 can be fitted with add-on
armour and spall liner to increase ballistic protection. |
Mobility |
The
RG21 uses Iveco drivelines including a 176kW 5.88L Diesel engine
coupled to a ZF 6S800 manual gearbox with six speeds and beam
axles with hub reduction and optional front and rear differential
locks. The suspension uses parabolic leaf springs with anti-roll
bars and dual or optional wheel shock absorbers. The RG21 can
run at a maximum speed of 110 km/h. The RG21 can climb a 60%
slope and has a 15 m kerb to kerb turning circle. |
Accessories |
A
standard CANNBUS electrical system is fitted allowing easy to
maintain diagnostics. The RG21 is also equipped with a self-recovery
winch of 9,000 kg mounted at the front of the vehicle. A spare
wheel is fitted on the rear door. In option, the RG21 can be
equipped with a full range of equipment as air-conditioning,
interior seat storage, fording kit, rear view camera, radio
racks, hot climate customization , search light, run flat system,
IR lights and dual battery system. |
