According to pictures published on the Twitter account Andrei_bt on May 28, 2022, the Ukrainian army has deployed its latest generation of local-made Main Battle Tank (MBT) T-84 Oplot and T-72AMT to fight Russian troops.

According to open source information published on the Internet, the Ukrainian armed forces would have lost more than 187 Main Battle Tanks (MBTs) since the beginning of the war. According to the military balance 2021, the Ukrainian army had a total of 1,990 Main Battle Tanks (MBTs) including 410 T-64BV, 210 T-64BV Mod 2017, 100 T-64BM Bulat, 100 T-72AV/B1, 33 T-72AMT, 5 T-84 Oplot, as well as 34 T-80, 500 t-72, 578 T-64 and 20 T-55 all in store.

With many of tanks already lost in combat, Ukraine has involved all its combat tank capabilities, including locally manufactured tanks such as the T-84 Oplot and the T-72 AMT.

The T-84 Oplot is an improved version of the Russian-made T-80 MBT that was developed and manufactured in Ukraine. the tank has a conventional layout with the driver’s compartment at the front, a turret in the middle with the commander and gunner, and powerpack at the rear.

The T-84 Oplot is armed with a stabilized 125mm KBA3 smoothbore gun fed by a carousel-type automatic loader and fitted with a thermal sleeve and fume extractor (bore evacuator). The gun is stabilized in both elevation and traverse. The main gun can also fire a laser-guided missile against battle tanks, armored vehicles, and hovering helicopters with a maximum firing range of 5,000 m.

The hull and the turret of the T-84 Oplot are protected by passive armor and Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA) to increase protection against shaped charges and specially hardened kinetic energy penetrators. The tank can withstand 10 kg of TNT explosion under the tank track and up to 4 kg under the driver’s compartment.

The T-84 Oplot is motorized with a 6TD-2 diesel engine developing 1,200 hp. It can run at a maximum road speed of 70 km/g with a maximum cruising range of 450 km.

The T-72AMT is an upgraded version of the Russian-made T-72A MBT that was developed by the Ukrainian company Kyiv Armoured Plant. The tank has a crew of three including a driver, commander, and gunner.

The T-772AMT is armed with a 125mm 2A46 smoothbore gun which can fire a full range of ammunition including armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding-sabot (APFSDS) rounds, high-explosive anti-tank fin-stabilized (HEAT-FS) rounds, and high-explosive fragmentation fin-stabilized (HE-FRAG-FS) rounds. The cannon can also fire a locally-made anti-tank laser-guided missile at a maximum firing range of 5,000 m and is able of penetrating armor up to 750 mm thick. The second armament includes a coaxially mounted 7.62mm PKT machine gun and a 12.7mm NSV machine gun.

The T-72AMY is powered by a V-84-1 multifuel diesel engine developing 840 hp. The tank can reach a top road speed of 60 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 500 km.
