ReconRobotics is the world leader in tactical micro-robot systems, an entirely new class of robots that it first introduced in 2007. Worldwide, more than 4,000 of the company’s Recon Scout® and Throwbot® systems have been deployed by the U.S. military and international friendly forces, and by nearly 800 federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

ReconRobotics was formed in 2006 to commercialize robotics technology developed at the University of Minnesota Distributed Robotics Laboratory under funding from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The company is headquartered in Edina, Minnesota, and bases its international operations in Lugano, Switzerland. ReconRobotics now markets its products through a distribution network in 33 countries. Among the users of its robot systems are the U.S. Army, Navy and Marine Corps, as well as many federal agencies, including the U.S. Marshals, DEA, Border Patrol, FBI and ATF.

ReconRobotics Awarded $13.9 Million Contract by the U.S. Army
EDINA, Minn. – (June 27, 2012) ReconRobotics, Inc., the world leader in tactical micro-robot systems, announced today that it has been awarded a $13.9 million contract by the U.S. Army’s Rapid Equipping Force for up to 1,000 miniature, throwable, mobile robots. The Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract will streamline the purchasing process for deploying Army and Marine Corps units and speed delivery on the company’s pre-priced micro-robot systems and accessories. The U.S. Military is acquiring the micro-robots to provide four- and five-man fire teams with immediate tactical reconnaissance during urban warfare operations, surveillance missions and counter-IED efforts. ReconRobotics has already received and begun delivering the first order under this contract for 84 robots.

ReconRobotics Delivers 13 Recon Scout XT Robots to DC Area Tactical Teams
EDINA, Minn. – (May 2, 2012) ReconRobotics, Inc. announced today that the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG) has purchased and taken delivery of 13 Recon Scout® XT micro-robot kits, which it has distributed to pre-designated Type 1 tactical teams throughout the Washington DC area. MWCOG purchased the tactical reconnaissance robots using grant funds from the Urban Areas Security Initiative, which were awarded to MWCOG in 2011. Area tactical and special operations teams will use the throwable micro-robot systems during high-risk tactical and counterterrorism operations to gain improved situational awareness and greater standoff distance.

Products

For example, the highly water resistant Throwbot XT delivers both video and audio reconnaissance, is equipped with an automatic infrared optical system and can traverse cluttered indoor environments or outdoor landscapes. Operating the device requires no special training, and it can be deployed in five seconds simply by pulling the activation pin and throwing it into an environment. Once the robot has been deployed, it can be directed to move through the environment and transmit video back to a 1.6lb handheld Operator Control Unit (OCU). Throwbot XT Tactical Micro-Robot
The Throwbot® XT is a throwable micro-robot that enables operators to obtain instantaneous video reconnaissance within indoor or outdoor environments. The TXT weighs 1.2 pounds (540g) and can be thrown up to 120 feet (36m). Once deployed, it can be directed to quietly move through a structure and transmit real-time video to the operator’s handheld OCU. This video can be used to locate and identify subjects, confirm the presence of hostages, and reveal the layout of rooms. The TXT is equipped with an infrared optical system that automatically turns on when the ambient light is low, and it can transmit video up to 100 feet (30m) through walls, windows and doors to the OCU. The robot may be specified in any of three pre-determined transmitting frequencies, allowing users to operate up to three robots in the same environment at the same time. Recon Scout Operator Control Unit (OCU) II
The Recon Scout® Operator Control Unit II (OCU II) is equipped with integral, rotating antennas that are always attached, making for quicker activation and increased robustness. The OCU II works with the Throwbot® XT and any new Recon Scout micro-robot, including the Recon Scout IR, Recon Scout UVI and Recon Scout Throwbot LE. The OCU II is matched to the robot at the time of manufacturing and can be specified in any one of the ReconRobotics frequency channels. When paired with the Throwbot XT, it is capable of receiving both audio and video transmissions from the robot, and comes equipped with Audio Out and Video Out jacks. The OCU II weighs just 1.6lbs (.73kg) and features a single joystick, which allows an operator to direct the movement of the robot with just one hand.

Recon Scout SearchStick
The Recon Scout® SearchStick device enables tactical and patrol personnel to instantly convert any Recon Scout robot into a versatile pole camera. It allows tactical operators to maintain standoff distance when clearing elevated/confined spaces, including walled compounds, elevated windows, stairwells, attics, ventilation ducts, crawl spaces, tunnels and vehicle undercarriages.
Simply grasp the Recon Scout robot in the powered jaws of the pole and extend the pole to the necessary length. The robot then transmits live video of the environment to the Operator Control Unit (OCU). In addition, the SearchStick allows an operator to quietly deploy the robot into an elevated or confined environment while maintaining a safe standoff distance and later retrieve the robot when the reconnaissance has been completed.
The SearchStick pole has a collapsed length of 20.5 inches (52cm) and can be extended to a length of 72 inches (183cm).
