information |
The
Desert Chameleon is a wheeled armoured vehicle
6x6x6 designed and developed by the American Defence
Company ADVS. ADVS designed, manufactured, tested,
and completed the vehicles for delivery by fall
2010, a less-than three year full development
to production timeline duration. In January 2010,
Advanced Defense Vehicle Systems (ADVS) announced
the first production delivery of the ADVS 6X6X6
Desert Chameleon armored personnel carriers to
the Kuwait Ministry of Interior (KMOI). ADVS began
discussion with the KMOI in 2007 to design a security
vehicle able to meet their specific mobility,
survivability, and performance requirements. These
advanced wheeled vehicles offer the most innovative
design and safety features, surpassing current
U.S. Army military vehicles in terms of manoeuvrability,
capability, performance, comfort and survivability.

Armament |
The
version of Desert Chameleon 6x6x6 delivered
to the Kuwait Ministry of Interior is equipped
with the Remote Multipurpose Turret Systems
(RMTSs) from ADVS (UK). The RMTS was developed
by ADVS (UK) as a private venture at its
Sheffield facility for installation on new-build
and existing armoured vehicle platforms,
while the Desert Chameleon vehicles were
built at the US facilities of ADVS. The
baseline RMTS is of all-welded steel armour
protecting against 7.62 mm armour-piercing
attack in its basic form through a full
360 degrees, but the systems supplied for
the Desert Chameleon are protected against
14.5 mm armour-piercing attack. The turret
is mounted on the top of the crew compartment,
front of the vehicle. A range of four smoke
grenades discharger is fitted to each sides
of the turret.
|
Protection |
The
ADVS 6x6x6 Desert Chameleon vehicle specs
include a removable “V” hull
design with adaptable armor modules to increase
blast dispersion and survivability. No information
is available concerning the armor of the
Desert Chameleon, but we can suppose that
the level protection of the hull is the
same as for the turret. The Desert Chameleon
can be also upgraded with add-on armor.
|
Propulsion |
The Desert Chameleon is fitted with an 6x6x6
independent active-suspension and a speed
sensitive all-wheel steering system. The
Desert Chameleon is motorized with a 600-horsepower
Caterpillar engine power-pack coupled to
an Automatic 6-Speed, Caterpillar Transmission.
The binnacle has a slide adjustment for
changing between right and left hand steering
at any speed.

Accessories
|
Each
side of the hull is equipped with one small
door, on hydraulic ramp is mounted at the
rear. The cockpit has 4 panoramic periscopes,

gun ports are mounted at the rear side of
each side of the hull, with one panoramic
periscope on the top of the hull.
