Combat, reconnaissance armoured and fast attack vehicles Acmat for modern Special Forces units.

Today, Special Forces are engaged in a war against the terrorism and they need multi-purpose combat vehicle able to provide them with tactical mobility in harsh terrain. Tactical vehicles for Special Forces Operations are used for a wide range of missions as counter-proliferation, foreign and homeland security, special reconnaissance, direct action, and unconventional warfare missions. Modularity, protection and fire power are key features for the new vehicles of Special Forces Operations (SOF).

In the past, the primary vehicles employed by Special Forces were the AM General HUMVEE, Land Rover or light truck. To face new threats and needs of the modern battlefield, special forces soldiers used to modify their vehicles by adding auxiliary fuel bladders, ammo storage racks, rear floor reinforcement, roll bars, rear bench seats, smoke and grenades launcher systems, recovery strap kits, jacks and skid plates, spare tire carriers, side rails, and various types of weapon mounts.

But the experience in Afghanistan and Iraq has shown that this was not enough considering the new threats in the form of road side bombs and improvised explosive devices. Most Special Forces units worldwide are now requesting new types of vehicles dedicated to special operations such as the Bastion Patsas which provides high mobility, protection, fire power and rapid deployment by plane or helicopter.

Although SOF units can generally be regarded as ‘light’ forces there are however operational situations where they require a higher level of protection than offered by patrol vehicles derived from light utility vehicles such as the HMMWV or Land Rover.

The BASTION Patsas is designed and manufactured by the French Company ACMAT to provide a vehicle that can be carried internally by helicopters for deployment on reconnaissance, direct action and logistics missions. Weapons such as a 7.62 mm or 12.7 mm machine gun can be mounted on the roof, which incorporates an integral roll bar to protect the driver and front seat passenger.

For many years light tactical vehicles VLRA TPK from the French Defence Company Acmat are used by many armed forces in the world. To meet the new needs of the armies for combat and reconnaissance vehicles, ACMAT introduces the VLRA TDN-TDE and ALTV Torpedo. The new VLRA TDN-TDE is based on the combat proven technology of the VLRA with the same concept of ACMAT for light tactical vehicle for military use. The new VLRA TDN-TDE meets the whole tactical and operational requirements of the Armed Forces and the Special Forces, with more mobility, payload and protection.

Reconnaissance units frequently need to travel long distances, and for several days in complete autonomy. The New VLRA TDN-TDE of ACMAT is motorized with a new powerful 5.0-litre turbo Diesel Intercooler engine developing 190 hp at 2,300 rpm. The VLRA can run at a maximum speed of 110 km/h with a range of 1,400 km without refueling.

The payload of the VLRA TDN-TDE has been increased to 4,500 kg, the vehicle can carried more equipment, fuel, water and munitions that the old VLRA TPK which had a payload of 2,500 kg. This new feature allows a fighting unit to conduct missions for a few days in full autonomy and far from its base.

Today all military vehicles are under the threats of road side bombs and IEDs (Improvised Explosive Device), the VLRA TDN-TDE can be fitted with additional armour kits, which provides ballistic protection levels 1 / 2 and anti-mine protection levels 2a / 2b STANAG 4569.

Reconnaissance units and Special Forces are often confronted to conduct combat missions in desert environments. With the ALTV Torpedo, the French Company ACMAT offers a new solution of Fast Attack Vehicle which can be used for that type of combat mission with high mobility, cargo capacity and fire power. The ALTV Torpedo has only minimal armour but provides aluminum protection under the chassis against mine Level 1 STANAG 4569.

For the fire power, the vehicle can be fitted at the front with light machine gun 5.56 or 7.62 mm swivel station, a circular ring mount station in the centre armed with 12.7 mm machine gun or 40mm automatic grenade launcher. One more light machine gun swivel station can be added on each side at the rear of the open top crew compartment.

The top of the ALTV Torpedo is left open for visibility. Most of the vehicle protection resides in its maneuverability and main armament stand-off distance. The vehicle is designed to provide reconnaissance and Special Forces units with a real off-road patrol and fire-support vehicle with increased performance, outclassing the standard light tactical vehicle which previously fulfilled the role.

For high mobility, the ALTV Torpedo is motorized with a 2.5-litre Turbo Diesel engine developing 190 hp at 4,000 rpm. The vehicle can reach a maximum road speed of 160 km/h with a maximum range of 1,600 km.

In its new range of VLRA TDN/TDE vehicles, the French Defence Company ACMAT has designed and developed a vehicle adapted especially for Special Forces and reconnaissance units. The vehicle is based on the VLRA TDN-TDE chassis with an open-top crew and rear compartment which allows to carrying multiple weapon systems while providing maximum situational awareness for its operators. In this manner, both operators in the rear could stand up to observe from the open hatch or engage hostile targets.

With a maximum payload of 4,500 kg, the VLRA TDN-TDE Commando can carry a large quantity of fuel, ammunition, food and water, allowing Special Forces units to travel great distances, and perform their missions in complete autonomy during several days.

The VLRA TDN-TDE has a maximum ground clearance of 600 mm, is capable of bridging a 1,000 mm gap and has a maximum approach angle of 45-degrees.

As with the standard VLRA TDN-TDE, the Commando version has ballistic protection levels 1/2 and anti-mine protection levels 2a/2b NATO STANAG 4569.

Fire power is one of the main request for Special Forces vehicle, the VLRA TDN-TDE Commando can be fitted with ring mount turret armed with a 7.62, 12.7 mm machine gun or 40 mm automatic grenade launcher. The front and the rear part of the vehicle can be equipped with swivel station for 5.56 mm machine gun. For its self-protection, smoke grenades discharger can be added on top and sides.
