The light troop's carrier: the standard multirole vehicle in Africa and Middle East.

The troop’s carrier is a light wheeled vehicle design to carry the soldiers on the battlefield with high mobility and all-terrain capacities. In Europe, the troops carrier is protected by armour but in Africa and some Middle East countries, the vehicle use an open top crew compartment. This type of vehicle can also be used as short range reconnaissance patrol vehicle. (By Alain Servaes Chief Editor Army Recognition)

In Africa and in the deserts of the Middle East, personnel carrier vehicle do not need to be shielded, it is not the threat of mines or improvised explosive devices which is priority but the ability to ride off-road, over long distances without refueling. In addition the troop carrier vehicle must be multi-mission and multi-role.

With the global reduction of defense budgets, the factor of life-cycle costs becomes a mandatory consideration and requires a maximum use of common parts across all fleet of combat vehicles.

For the terrains in Africa and Middle East, the light personnel carrier must be of simple design to allow easy mechanical intervention in all conditions. Indeed, the configuration of the terrains of these continents put a lot of strain and stress on this type of vehicle. To answer this problem, manufacturers of military vehicles have made the design and development based on civilian all-terrain vehicle for reasons of easy maintenance and lower costs, by integrating constraints and need for a military vehicle in terms of mobility, weight and payload.

Several defence companies in the world already offer for many years this type of vehicle as the German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz with its light truck Unimog or the French Defence Company ACMAT with the VLRA TPK.

With the VLRA TPK and its new ALTV, the French Defence Company ACMAT provides an unrivalled expertise in the field of military vehicles and especially light troop carriers which are used by more than 50 countries in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.

The VLRA TPK is one the most commonly military vehicle used by armed forces worldwide. The VLRA is a combat proven vehicle, and has recently showed its fighting and operational capabilities in recent conflicts and peacekeeping missions in Africa and Middle East.

The ACMAT vehicles are based on standardization, commonality of parts and components, and on interchangeability; parts are interchangeable with vehicles built 30 years ago. Parts commonality includes cabs, structural components, engines and drive trains. ACMAT uses many of the same parts in all its line of vehicles.

Robustness, mobility and simplified maintenance were and remain the specifications of ACMAT 4x4 and 6x6 ranges of military vehicles to support the Foreign Operations and the Special Forces of the French Army.

Within the framework of an evolution of its range of military vehicles and to meet new needs and requests of modern armies, ACMAT has launched in 2010 at the defence Exhibition in Paris, Euroastory, a new light truck version the VLRA TDN-TDE and the first military pickup produced in France and dedicated to a wide range of tactical missions.

The VLRA TDN-TDE is the future of light troop carrier with new high power engine to increase mobility and payload. With its new 5.0-litre Turbo Diesel Intercooler engine with a power of 215bhp at 2,300 rpm, the VLRA TDN-TDE can run at a maximum road speed of 110 km/h with a range of 1,400 km without refueling. With an increased payload from 2,500 kg to 4,500 kg, the VLRA TDN-TDE can carry 12 to 19 soldiers fully equipped. On request, the vehicle can be fitted with ballistic and mines protection kits.

The VLRA TDN-TDE meets all tactical and operational requirements of modern armed forces and Special Forces units.

The light tactical troop’s carrier vehicle can also be used as reconnaissance or law enforcement vehicle. In this case, it will not need long range or significant payload capabilities, but it must always be able to operate in all-terrain conditions.

In its continuous search to develop modern military vehicles corresponding to the new requests of armed forces worldwide, ACMAT has developed and manufactured a light troop carrier vehicle ideally suited for reconnaissance and law enforcement missions, the ALTV.

Air transportable and suitable for parachuting, this highly mobile off-roader combines a payload of up to 1.4t with the capability to provide ballistic and mine protection. The ALTV is available in various configurations, as a two-seater single cab or four-seat double cab. In two-seat cab version, the rear part of the vehicle can be fitted with seats down the sides or centre of the cargo area for carrying personnel.

To increase the protection of the ALTV against new threats, the vehicle can be fitted with armour kit which provides a protection for the crew against small arms firing 5.56 or 7.62 mm caliber. For its self-protection, a 360 ° ring mount can be mounted at the rear part of the crew compartment which can be armed with 7.62 or 12.7 mm machine gun.
