In Ukraine, it was proposed to convert part of the outdated 2S1 Gvozdika self-propelled howitzers into infantry fighting vehicles, called "Kevlar-E". It is planned to dismantle the turret with its 122mm gun and equipment in the stern in favor of a full-fledged troop compartment for 6 people. The crew consists of 3 military personnel. The Shturm remote weapon station manufactured by Kharkiv Morozov Machine Building Design Bureau (KMDB) is armed with the Barrier ATGM, a 30mm automatic gun (360 rounds in storage, 400 rds/min) having a 3,000m firing range, a 7.62-mm machine gun and a 30-mm grenade launcher. A Cummins engine is installed. The maximum speed on road is 70 km/h, or 5 km/h on water. The driving range is 600 km. The possibility of installing additional reactive armor kits has been mentioned.

Ukrainian sources note that this project, if implemented, will allow increasing the number of infantry fighting vehicles both within a short time and relatively cheaply. However, the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is unlikely to agree to a massive conversion of the 2S1 Gvozdika into Kevlar-E. The fact is that, at present, artillery units are experiencing a shortage of serviceable self-propelled guns. As a result, they were even forced in 2018-19 to buy 56 Gvozdikas to the Czech Republic. And, most likely, if a batch of such conversions is made, it will only be in small quantities for demonstration at parades and exhibitions, Dmitry Lemeshko assumes.
