Description
In May 2013, Boeing has unveiled its Phantom Badger tactical ground vehicle, designed to be internally transported in the Bell-Boeing V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft. The vehicle, displayed at the company's St Louis facility in Missouri on 21 May, has been developed by the newly-formed Special Pursuit Cell (SPC) within Boeing's Phantom Works in response to a request from the US special operations forces (SOF) community. At AUSA 2013, U.S. Army Annual Meeting & Exposition, Boeing has presented the first version of its Phantom Badger. Boeing’s Phantom Badger is a high performance combat support vehicle with interchangeable mission modules specifically designed to fit in the Bell-Boeing V-22 and other aircraft. Phantom Badger supports a wide range of special operations missions not possible with existing vehicles. At just 152.5 cm wide, the Phantom Badger will fit inside the V-22's main cabin with the aircraft's seats retracted. Although the vehicle can also be sling-loaded, V-22 weight constraints mean it can only carry a single vehicle at a time. The combination of V-22 transportability and proven all-terrain performance provides mission flexibility and survivability. The Badger's weight is also half that of a standard Humvee. In March 2014, the U.S. Navy certified that the Boeing Phantom Badger combat support vehicle can be transported inside a V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft.

Technical Data

Armament
The Boeing Phantom Badger is fitted with a ring mount weapon system mounted in the center of the vehicle which is armed with a 12.7mm heavy machine gun and can be rotated on 360°.. There is also two light 5.56 caliber machine guns mounted on swivel station at the rear, on each side of the hull.
Design and protection
The Boeing Phantom Badger is based on an open top architecture including a tubular frame roll-bar to protect the crew. While the prototype vehicle features a carbon fiber hood, Boeing has since decided this has been ‘over-engineered’ and has moved instead to fiber glass. The engine is mounted at the front of the vehicle. The vehicle can carry five soldiers, two at the front, one in the middle, and two at the rear with seats which are directed backward. Phantom Badger features customizable rear sections that can support a wide range of critical mission profiles such as reconnaissance, explosive ordnance disposal, mounted weaponry, combat search and rescue, and even casualty transport for several critically injured warfighters.
Mobility
The Boeing Phantom Badger is powered by a 240-horsepower multi-fuel engine that powers both of the vehicle's steerable axles. The vehicle is able to reach a maximum road speed of 130 km/h. The vehicle features four wheel steering, enhanced shocks and suspension developed by MSI, and mission-specific modules fitted behind the front two seats. These can be changed within 30 minutes, allowing Special Forces operators to quickly re-role the vehicle. The vehicle is able to cross water nearly 0.9m deep.
