Ukraine has signed a contract with Thailand to manufacture BTR-3 8x8 armored personnel carrier.
Ukraine and Thailand on November 3, 2015, signed a cooperation agreement on co-manufacturing armoured personnel carriers BTR-3 in Thailand, the press service of Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council (NSDC) reports.

In 2007, Thailand has signed an agreement to purchase 96 armored vehicles BTR-3E1. In August 2011, Ukkraine has concluded another contract to supply 121 BTR-3E1 to the Thai armed forces.

The first order of 96 BTR-3E1 consisted of several variants including 64 BTR-3E1 infantry fighting vehicles, four BTR-3E1 command post, three BTR-3E1s medical support, nine BTR-3E1s 81-mm mortar carrier, four BTR-3E1s 120-mm mortar carrier, six BTR-3E1 anti-tank missile vehicle, and six BTR-3E1s recovery.

To date, the Ukraine has reportedly supplied 233 BTR-3E1s to Thailand as part of a combined $270m contract awarded in 2006 and 2011.

In 2013, UkrespectExport has been awarded a contract for delivery of additional 21 BTR-3E1 armoured personnel carriers (APCs) to the Royal Thai Army. The contract covers supply of locally assembled 15 BTR-3E1 and six BTR-3RK vehicles to the Thailand.

"The document was signed within the frameworks of the Ukrainian delegation participation in the international exhibition Defence&Security 2015, held in Bangkok (Kingdom of Thailand). The document provides for localization of production of armoured vehicles family BTR-3 on the territory of the Kingdom of Thailand," said the NSDC statement.

The Ukrainian delegation was headed by Defence Minister Stepan Poltorak.

The NSDC said that under the Ukrainian-Thai cooperation agreement and in accordance with two previous agreements, Ukraine will export armoured personnel carriers, tanks, and support vehicles to Thailand.

"The new agreement will provide additional financial revenues for Ukraine. It will also improve existing capacities for manufacturing and modernizing military equipment for internal requirements. The deal strengthens Ukraine's position in the Asian region," NSDC Deputy Oleh Hladkovsky said.

The BTR-3E1 is an 8x8 armoured vehicle personnel carrier designed and manufactured in Ukraine by the Defense Company Kharkiv Morozov Machine Building Design Bureau.

The hull and the turret of the BTR-3E1 is made with all-welded steel armour which provides a protection against firing of small arms and shell splinters. The vehicle can carry a total of 9 military personnel including commander, driver and gunner.

The BTR-3E1 is fitted with the BM-3 Shturm turret. The turret is armed with a ZTM-1 30 mm automatic gun which can be remotely operated to provide increased solider protection in hostile environments. Anti-tank missile launcher "Barrier" are mounted at the right side of th turret and a 30 mm automatic grenade launcher AGS-17 is mounted at the left side.
