Babcock Acquires 11 L-39 Albatros Aircraft to Enhance Fighter Pilot Training in France.

The British company Babcock announced on December 19, 2024, the acquisition of 11 L-39 “Albatros” aircraft from Apache Aviation. This initiative aims to strengthen the company’s international fighter pilot training academy, located on a former military base in Dijon, France. It represents a strategic step in Babcock’s ability to meet the needs of international air forces while adhering to NATO operational standards and the requirements of modern defense scenarios.

The Dijon academy offers programs tailored to the specific needs of air forces, including training for future fighter pilots, instructor certification, and advanced qualification for experienced pilots. It also provides training for close air support missions, involving advanced controllers (JTAC). The courses are designed and delivered by former pilots from the French Air and Space Force, ensuring expertise and alignment with international standards.

The L-39 “Albatros,” developed by Aero Vodochody, is a durable and versatile training aircraft widely used since its introduction in 1968. Equipped with an Ivtchenko-Progress AI-25TL turbojet engine, it delivers advanced training performance with a top speed of 910 km/h and a payload capacity of 1,290 kg. While primarily designed for training purposes, it can also be employed for light tactical support missions, making it a preferred choice for various countries.

These aircraft, now integrated into the Dijon academy’s programs, will serve as platforms for realistic combat scenarios. They will also support training missions for fighter squadrons, naval units, and ground forces, functioning as aerial targets during operational exercises.

Pierre Basquin, General Manager of Aviation and Babcock France's CEO, highlighted this initiative's significance for defense forces. He explained that military pilot training is a fundamental element of defense capabilities. By leveraging expertise, robust infrastructure, and innovation, Babcock offers a comprehensive training system designed to replicate real-world military flying conditions. This system is continuously updated to keep pace with technological and operational advancements, ensuring it meets the evolving needs of its clients.

With this acquisition, Babcock strengthens its role in military training and expands its capacity to address the evolving demands of modern security environments. The L-39 aircraft, previously operated by the “Breitling Jet Team” for international aerial demonstrations, fit seamlessly into this framework, offering versatility and operational reliability. This initiative enhances both Babcock’s capabilities and the readiness of international forces to meet future challenges.
