This 27 January
2006, the Belgian government approved the programme
of acquisition of new wheeled armoured vehicles
8x8. This acquisition is the last shot of the
modernization of the vehicles for the Belgian
ground force. The contract was allotted to the
Swiss firm Mowag. The Mowag vehicle, Piranha IIIC,
fulfills best the requirements of the specification.
The complete range is made up of seven versions
which will replace all the existing tracked vehicles
(Leopard, AIFV and M113): 99 vehicule use as armoured
personnel carrier, 32 vehicles AIFV with gun of
30 mm, 40 vehicle as antitank vehicle with 90
mm gun, 24 command post vehicle, 12 ambulance
vehicle, 17 armoured recovery and repair vehicle,
and 18 engineer vehicle. Belgian defense also
made the acquisition of armoured trucks and jeeps
of the Italian IVECO company. 27 January 2006
