U.S. Colonel Clemente emphasized the significance of this achievement, highlighting the enhanced capabilities of Ukrainian forces, bolstered by the cutting-edge Western defense technology of the Patriot system. The A-50, a pivotal asset in Russia's aerial surveillance and command operations, was brought down over the Sea of Azov on January 14, 2024. This incident, marking a major loss for the Russian Air Force, underscores the effectiveness of the Patriot system and the strategic advantage it provides to Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict.

Ukrainian forces successfully downed a Russian A-50 AWACS aircraft on January 14, 2024, over the Sea of Azov. The operation also inflicted severe damage on an Il-22M11 airborne command post, further demonstrating the effectiveness of the Ukrainian forces and the Patriot system. The A-50, an advanced long-range radar detection and control aircraft, was crucial for Russia's aerial surveillance and command capabilities, providing early warning and control functions during missile strikes and other military operations.

The Ukrainian military meticulously planned and executed this historic operation, utilizing the U.S.-supplied Patriot surface-to-air missile system. The destruction of the A-50 is particularly noteworthy as it represents the first instance of such an aircraft being taken down in combat, significantly impairing Russia's ability to monitor and manage air and ground operations.

Ukrainian Air Force Commander Lieutenant General Mykola Oleshchuk and other military leaders lauded the operation's success, highlighting its strategic impact. The event underscores the effectiveness of the advanced defense systems provided by Western allies, bolstering Ukraine's defensive and offensive capabilities in the ongoing conflict.

The Patriot air defense system, developed by Raytheon, is a highly advanced surface-to-air missile system designed to detect, track, and engage aerial threats such as aircraft, drones, and ballistic and cruise missiles. Its primary components include the AN/MPQ-65 radar system, which provides target detection and tracking, the command and control system that processes the radar data, and the MIM-104 Patriot missiles used for interception. The system can engage multiple targets simultaneously at ranges up to 100 kilometers and altitudes up to 24 kilometers, depending on the missile variant used. This multi-layered defense capability ensures comprehensive protection against a wide range of aerial threats.

The Patriot system is renowned for its combat effectiveness, having been deployed in various conflicts, most notably during the Gulf War, where it was used to intercept Iraqi Scud missiles. Its ability to integrate with other defense systems, such as the Aegis Combat System and the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), further enhances its versatility and strategic value. The system's mobility allows it to be quickly deployed and redeployed, making it a critical asset for both fixed and moving defensive operations. The Patriot's advanced technology and proven reliability make it a cornerstone of modern air defense strategies worldwide.

Destroying the Russian A-50 AWACS aircraft is a crucial victory for Ukraine in the ongoing conflict because of the aircraft's pivotal role in Russian military operations. The A-50 functions as an airborne early warning and control system, equipped with advanced radar and surveillance capabilities. It can detect and track multiple aerial and ground targets, providing real-time data that enhances the situational awareness and coordination of Russian forces during combat. This aircraft plays a vital role in guiding fighter jets and missiles, making it a formidable asset for command and control operations.

The elimination of the A-50 significantly hampers Russia's ability to conduct coordinated air operations and to detect and respond effectively to Ukrainian air and missile attacks. This reduction in capability decreases the effectiveness of Russian air defenses and diminishes their ability to protect high-value targets. Furthermore, the loss of the A-50 limits Russia's ability to gather intelligence and maintain air superiority, providing Ukrainian forces with a strategic advantage in terms of mobility and the element of surprise in their operations.

The A-50 is built on the Il-76 transport aircraft platform and features a large radar dome that provides 360-degree surveillance coverage. It can detect and track multiple aerial targets at long ranges—up to 650 kilometers for bombers and 300 kilometers for fighter jets. The A-50 serves as an airborne command post, capable of directing and coordinating the actions of friendly aircraft and air defense systems, relaying crucial information to ground control stations and fighter jets, thus enhancing the effectiveness and coordination of air defense operations. Additionally, it can monitor ground targets and naval vessels, providing comprehensive situational awareness to support both offensive and defensive operations.

In summary, the destruction of the A-50 by Ukrainian forces not only disrupts Russian command and control capabilities but also marks a strategic setback for Russia, reducing its ability to manage air operations and respond to Ukrainian military actions effectively.

VAB AELAD presented by French Army at Eurosatory (Picture source:Army recognition)

The development of the VAB ARLAD was initiated by the Army's Technical Section in 2020. The aim was to address an operational emergency, as explained by Joël Barre, then the General Delegate for Armament [DGA], who noted that the challenge was to equip the armored front vehicles [VAB] with an anti-drone detection radar and an effector capable of destroying drones, including a 12.7 mm machine gun, which was also intended to have grenade launching capabilities.

The 12.7 mm machine gun proved insufficient, so the STAT came up with the idea to enhance it with an "airburst" capability, using a 40 mm grenade launcher. This was to be paired with a radar—the same as that of the MILAD system [Joint Anti-Drone Warfare Means]—capable of detecting a mini-drone from 2,500 meters away.

Although a few units were deployed in the Sahel in 2021, the VAB ARLAD is still not operational on a large scale within the Army.

The development of the VAB ARLAD was supported by Arquus and CS Group, to whom the MILD program had been entrusted.

According to the program and developers, who spoke in April 2024, only 12 VAB ARLADs will be issued. However, in the military programming law for 2024-2030, in addition to these 12 VAB ARLADs, the Army is expected to have 36 light multi-role armored vehicles [VBMR-L] Serval dedicated to anti-aircraft warfare, 24 of which will be equipped with a MISTRAL [light portable anti-aircraft missile] turret. This particularly enhances the army units' capabilities in combating aerial threats.

The Centurion D14, a product of this partnership, was developed by the group's subsidiary, Essonne Sécurité, known for its advanced bodywork and protection solutions. This armored vehicle is designed to safely transport agents during the most dangerous missions.

The vehicle stands out for its multipurpose capabilities. Equipped with a sturdy Renault 4x4 truck chassis, it provides essential maneuverability while supporting the substantial weight of the armor. The protection levels range from B4 to B6, enabling the Centurion D14 to withstand even the explosion of nearby mines and other explosive devices.

The vehicle's interior is as impressive as its defensive capabilities. It is fitted with individual seats for the driver and a companion, with additional seating for the agents. Access is via front doors for the drivers and side doors for other team members. Visibility is ensured by armored windows with grilles, and comfort is enhanced by efficient ventilation and lighting systems.

In addition to transporting personnel, the Centurion D14 can carry a wide range of equipment necessary for anti-terrorist interventions, thanks to a rear compartment accessible through an external door. It also features gun ports for firing from within, an automatic fire extinguishing system, and a front winch, with additional options such as blades for demolishing obstacles or a laser for dissuasion.

The exact number of armored vehicles produced by Essonne Sécurité at their Trémeur facility in Côtes-d’Armor remains undisclosed. However, these vehicles, including the well-regarded Carapace models, have significantly contributed to Armoric Holding's impressive growth. Since its inception in 2009, the group has seen its revenue soar from 2 million to 100 million euros in 15 years, with net profits expected to be between 4 and 5 million euros this year.

Amid the current market conditions, Essonne Sécurité has experienced a 30% increase in revenue over the past year. The company will also be represented at Eurosatory by another subsidiary, Scoma from Eure-et-Loir, known for manufacturing critical safety components like ball joints for steering systems, which has seen a 23% growth in activity in 2023, according to founder Frédéric Louis.

Additionally, the Sides brand, also part of the Armoric group and based in Saint-Nazaire, Loire-Atlantique, will present its firefighting vehicles, commonly used at numerous military air bases.

While Eurosatory is not typically a venue for finalizing orders, it serves as an important platform for showcasing innovations. Security and defense account for 15 to 20% of Armoric Holding's revenue, with 1 to 2% of that reinvested in innovation. This investment has led to new developments such as an innovative airport vehicle by Sides, a new line of security products for troop transport, and the production of a durable ball joint.

Armoric Holding, employing 500 people, maintains stability with a current order book valued at 120 million euros. However, Frédéric Louis has announced plans to seek a new partner, preferably international, to face new challenges such as integrating new technologies like drones, decarbonizing propulsion, and expanding exports. Currently, 40% of its activity is in exports, with a goal to increase this to 60%.

Already established in the United States and Morocco, Armoric Holding is exploring a new production facility in India. The future partner will need to bring a complementary vision and network, ideally from abroad, as the company aims to reach 500 million euros in revenue within the next decade.

It can transport a crew of one driver and up to 15 passengers (5 in the front and 10 in the rear), offering considerable mission space for soldiers and their equipment. Its protection is ensured by steel armor and an AMAP-ADS active protection system, guaranteeing the occupants' safety against ballistic threats and underbelly detonations thanks to its V-shaped hull.

Its Caterpillar 3126B engine with 350 horsepower allows it to reach a maximum speed of 60 km/h on paved roads and 25 km/h off-road, with a swimming capability of 4.5 km/h. It has been rigorously tested in extreme conditions, from the freezing temperatures of the Arctic (-45°C) to the scorching heat of the United Arab Emirates (49°C), demonstrating its reliability in diverse and hostile environments.

The flexibility of the Bronco is also a major asset. Its modular design, incorporating a CANBUS digital vehicle architecture and modern ergonomic interiors, allows it to be adapted for a variety of missions, whether combat support or service support. With over 40 available variants, the Bronco can be configured for missions as diverse as humanitarian assistance and disaster response.

In terms of deployment, the Bronco is designed to be easily transported by air, land, or sea. It is compatible with most military transport aircraft such as the C-130 or C-17, making it an ideal solution for expeditionary forces requiring rapid and effective mobility.

The Bronco All Terrain Tracked Carrier, presented at Eurosatory 2024, may not be a groundbreaking innovation, but the opportunity to see it in action was quite interesting. It demonstrated its capabilities, particularly its speed on challenging terrain, moving effortlessly on the Eurosatory outdoor demonstration field.

Arquus has also integrated its Battlenet vetronics suite into the Fortress Mk2, designed to work with the Hornet turrets and including Blue Force Tracking (BFT).

True to the tradition of ACMAT vehicles, the Fortress Mk2 is rugged, durable, reliable, and modular, which simplifies maintenance needs and reduces costs. Customizable, it can be configured for either right-hand or left-hand drive.

Arquus, known for its comprehensive and innovative approach to after-sales service, ensures optimal vehicle uptime in all operational theaters. With its logistics platform in Garchizy and an international network, Arquus guarantees the availability of spare parts worldwide on very short notice. The Fortress Mk2 exemplifies Arquus's commitment to innovation and its ability to meet the complex requirements of contemporary military operations, thus bolstering its proliferation in the international market.
