The
M1045, M1045A1, and M1045A2 HMMWVs were TOW Missile Carrier configurations
of the HMMWV family. The M1045A2 is an improved version of the basic
variant of the M1045 HMMWV family designed and manufactured by the American
Company AM-General. The M1045A2 Tube-Launched, Optical-Tracked, Wire-Guided
(TOW) missile variant replaced the M1045 and the M1046 HMMWV variants.
It provides ground mobility for the TOW missile system giving commanders
a more flexible and time sensitive, medium to long range, anti-armor
capability. Marine Armor Kit (MAK) can be installed on the M1045A2.
The M1045A2 is used to transport and launch TOW anti-tank missiles to
defeat armoured vehicles. The M1045A2 was intended to replace previous
iterations of both the M1045 series and the M1046/A1 types. |
Armament |
A
Tow anti-tank missile launcher unit is mounted on the top of
the M1045A2. Six missiles are carried in the cargo compartment.
The missiles carries a high-explosive, armour-piercing, shaped-charge
warhead that when its hits an enemy tank, produces a concentrated
heat stream that can burn through all but the latest composite
armour. The crew of M1045A2 can quickly dismount the TOW system
for ground use, if needed. The weapons platform can be traversed
360 degrees and the launcher elevated to 20 degrees and depressed
to 10 degrees. A 7.62mm machine gun can be mounted to the left
side of the TOW launcher for the self-protection of the crew
and vehicle. |
Design
and protection |
The
layout of the M1045A2 is similar to the basic variant of the
HMMWV with the engine at the front, crew compartment in the
middle and cargo area at the rear. The M1045, M1045A1, and M1045A2
provided added ballistic protection for TOW system components,
crew, and ammunition over the M966 series. |
Mobility |
The
chassis, mechanical components and general performance are the
same as other models of the standard Humvee M998 series. The
M1045 A2 is motorized with a V-8 6.5l Diesel engine coupled
to an 4-speed automatic transmission with a maximum input torque
rating of 451 lb.-ft. The M1045A2 can climb 60% slopes and traverse
a side slope of up to 40% fully loaded. The M1045A2 can ford
hard bottom water crossing up to 80 cm without a deep water
fording kit and up to 1.5 m with the kit.
|
Accessories |
The
difference between the M1045 and M1045A1 TOW carriers and the
M1046 and M1046A1 TOW carriers was that the M1045 types did
not have self-recovery winches and the M1046 types did. The
M1045A2 models had new bumpers, in addition to all the other
A2 series improvements, which made the vehicles slightly longer.
