According to the Military Balance 2021, the Spanish army has a total of 453 M113 tracked armored vehicles in different variants. The M113s are in service with the Spanish army since 1960 and are used by infantry, cavalry, artillery and engineer units.

In recent years the Spanish M113s have undergone modernizations to remain operational and respond to the new threats of the modern battlefield. The Spanish army has also planned a plan to remove part of the M113s and replace them with the new Dragon, an 8x8 wheeled armored vehicle.

The M113 is one the most popular APC (Armored Personnel Carrier) vehicle in the world. the development of the M113 started in 1956 with the goal of providing a lightweight tracked armored vehicle for infantry unit in the U.S. army.

The M113 design consist of all-welded aluminum armor hull mounted on a tracked chassis which provides protection against the firing of small arms and artillery shell splinters. The driver is seated at the front of the hull on the left side with the engine compartment on its right. The rear part of the hull is able to accommodate up to 11 infantrymen. The infantrymen enter and leave the M113 via a power-operated ramp in the rear of the hull that opens downwards and has a door in the left side.

The latest version of the M113 is powered by a 6V-53T 6-cylinder Detroit Diesel engine developing 275 hp at 2,800 rpm coupled to GMC Allison transmission with 4 forward and 1 reverse gears. The torsion bar suspension either side consists of five dual rubber-tired road wheels with the drive sprocket at the front and the idler at the rear. It can run at a maximum road speed of 60 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 480 km.
