Russian troops are successfully using Harpoon-3 handheld anti-drone systems in the special military operation in Ukraine, a source close to Russian uniformed agencies told TASS: “Russian units are successfully using advanced Harpoon-3 handheld anti-drone systems during the special military operation. Enemy drones are destroyed by an electromagnetic pulse,” the source said. The systems are highly effective and are easy to operate, the source added.

“It is enough to direct the device’s antenna towards a UAV and the drone’s electronics are deprived of the possibility to determine the location, and the drone’s contact with its operator is lost,” the source said, adding that the mobile device’s malfunctions were actually excluded. The source did not specify in which areas of the Ukraine operation anti-drone systems of the type were being used. TASS has no official information related to this matter.

Earlier, there were no official reports on the use of these anti-drone systems during the special military operation in Ukraine. A TASS source said in July that Stupor electromagnetic systems had been used by Russian troops in Ukraine for the first time.

Harpoon-3 anti-drone system

The Harpoon-3 anti-drone system was developed by the Automation and Programming Technologies Company. The first prototype was unveiled several years ago. The improved Harpoon-2M version with enhanced characteristics and new functions has been demonstrated at arms shows since 2019. The Harpoon-3 was unveiled at the MAKS 2021 air show.

The system is designed in the form of an anti-drone gun. It is composed of an instrument module with controls and a jacketed antenna. According to public sources, the system has a length of more than 1 m and a weight of 6.5 kg.

The Harpoon-3 can be used as a handheld gun or as part of a stationary system. The system can be mounted on a special platform with two-plane laying drives or can be remotely controlled, which enables the operator to simultaneously control several anti-drone guns scattered over a certain area.

The system is directed to a target visually and within the line of sight. It has a range of 3.5 km and up to 2 km in high frequency. The system’s memory stores information on various unmanned aerial vehicles and data on the fight against them. The Harpoon-3 can continuously operate for 60 minutes, using its own storage battery.
