Soldiers from the German Army arrived in Lithuania to form NATO Forward Presence Battalion.
On February 1, a first contingent of 70 soldiers of the German army arrived at Kaunas Airport in Lithuania by two C-160 military aircraft. They were welcomed at the airport by Commander of the German contingent and the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Lieutenant Colonel Christoph Huber.

The German contingent that will deploy in Lithuania in several stages is mainly formed by troops with the 122th Mechanised Infantry Battalion, 12th Mechanised Infantry Brigade of the German Armed Forces.

On February 1, through 10 mechanised infantry battalion soldiers with equipment will be arriving in Lithuania from Grafenwöhr (Germany) by air and railway. Over 450 German soldiers with their weaponry and over 100 military vehicles will form one of the maneuver units of the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion, deployed in Lithuania alongside Dutch and Norwegian military personnel.

The German soldiers will bring to Lithuania all dedicated equipment of the unit by mid-February: Marder IFVs (Infantry Fighting Vehicles), Leopard 2A6 main battle tanks, trucks and ATVs of different roles.

The German company will be redeployed by Lithuanian roads by the Belgian logistical company that arrived last week. Military columns escorted by the Lithuanian Military Police crews will move along main and regional roads of Šeštokai-Rukla route throughout the week.

Throughout the deployment and the first rotation period the German troops will be based in Rukla Garrison and train with Belgian, Dutch and Norwegian soldiers at field training exercises of different levels in Lithuanian Armed Forces’ training areas.
