Russian defense industry produces now a full range of unmanned aerial vehicles.

"An impressive progress has been made in unmanned aviation. The performance of combat missions in Syria has shown that they /UAVs/ are indispensable in operations," the Minister said. "Whereas in 2011 the Armed Forces used only 180 systems, now we’ve got 1,720 modern UAVs."

The military operations in Syria have seen the most extensive Russian use of unmanned aerial vehicles yet. Initial deployments of Russian drones in the Middle East were first reported long ago as the devices were set to reconnaissance work, tracking the movement of Islamist groups and the aircraft of the U.S.-led anti-terrorist coalition.

Taking part in the annual enlarged session of the MoD Board are also Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Commander-in-Chief, Security Council members, executives of the Federal Assembly and Government, and commanders of military districts, associations and formations of the Russian Armed Forces.

It was reported that in 2015 the Russian armed forces received unmanned aerial vehicles Orlan-10, Forpost, Tachyon, and Granat family of craft. In addition, development is underway on medium- and long-range craft like Zenitsa, Okhotnik-U, and Altius.

The Orlan-10 (“Sea eagle”) is used by the reconnaissance forces, where its minimal 33-lb (15 kg) weight offers the crucial advantage of a long flight time of almost 17 hours. The drone, which uses a parachute to land, can also be launched in field conditions using a mobile catapult.
