During Exercise Trident Juncture 15 (TRJE 15), members of industry under the Industry Involvement Initiative for NATO Exercises (I3X) were invited to observe various facets of the exercise. The programme was announced at NATO Industry Forum 14 and updated at NATO Industry Forum 15. NATO experts discuss the future of NATO telecommunications with I3X participants.

During the Command Post Exercise phase of the exercise, six groups of industry spent three days each visiting the Joint Warfare Centre in Stavanger, Norway and the Joint Task Force Headquarters (JTF HQ) in Zaragoza, Spain.

The groups were briefed on all aspects of the exercise from subject matter experts in such areas as planning, intelligence, operations, logistics, engineering, medicine, psychological operations, and public affairs. As well, the groups had an opportunity to observe the work done at the Headquarters and to interact with the staff on a very personal basis by asking questions and receiving honest and frank answers.

The aim of I3X is to welcome and encourage innovation by allowing industry to gain a foundational understanding of how NATO exercises are initiated, planned, executed and evaluated. During the LIVEX phase, in addition to visiting the JTF HQ, industry will spend a day in the field at the Land Command Headquarters, at the NATO Rapidly Deployable Corps Headquarters (Spain), the Joint Logistic Support Group and at tactical units.

The Capability Development process is critical to balancing capabilities and capacity to meet NATO Level of Ambition. In this regard, cooperation with Industry is one of the available options that carry significant potential. NATO exercises, whilst at the core of preparing the NATO Command Structure and NATO Force Structure for their missions, provide industry an opportunity to be imaginative and innovative and further contribute to development of capabilities required to meet future challenges. The vision of ACT's Industry Involvement Initiative for NATO Exercises (I3X) capitalizes on this opportunity, exploring venues for bringing insights and perspectives to NATO efforts in improving the relevance, interoperability, and readiness of NATO capabilities.
