Last week, soldiers
of the Golani Brigade participated in an exercise on the IDF's (Israel
Defence Forces) newest and most advanced armored
personnel carrier (APC), the Namer (Leopard). The Namer,
which is built on the frame of a Merkava IV tank, boasts advanced technology
enabling it to travel safely and securely through difficult and dangerous
terrain. Specifically, it is protected against explosives, machine guns,
and anti-tank missiles. It is equipped with the Trophy active defense
system, as well as an internal air conditioning unit that allows it
to travel safely through areas contaminated by hazardous materials. |

"The
Namer, an APC similar to the Merkava, came into use
in 2008, and it is the newest and most advanced armored combat vehicle
for infantry in the IDF and in the world," explained Maj. Yitav Mazur,
head of the Namer Section of the Infantry Training School. "It is
almost identical to the Merkava IV tank, except that they removed the
20-ton turret. What is left is a strong tool, more stable and faster than
ever." |
