Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the Chechen Republic showed its support for the Russians by sending troops to Ukraine to fight with the Russian army. Kadyrovite 141st Special Motorized Regiment fought alongside the Russian forces, while the Dzhokhar Dudayev Battalion, Sheikh Mansur Battalion, Separate Special Purpose Battalion and the Khamzat Gelayev Joint Task Detachment fought on the Ukrainian side.
Many Chechen groups have formed or moved to Ukraine throughout the Russian Invasion of Ukraine. Several hundred fighters have joined the war, most joining one of several Chechen groups. Some of these groups started operations during the Donbas war in 2014.
On 26 February 2022, Ramzan Kadyrov, the Head of the Chechen Republic, announced that Chechen military forces had been deployed to Ukraine, saying that Vladimir Putin "took the right decision and we will carry out his orders under any circumstances".
The video published on the Russian social network VK, on November 21, 2022, shows Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov inspecting troops and armored vehicles which will be sent to Ukraine to reinforce Russian troops.
Citing information from the VK Social Network, the Chechen Republic is ready to send 12 wheeled armored vehicles. This is the first time since the beginning of the war in Ukraine that the Chechen Republic send armored vehicles to fight Ukrainian troops.
Two types of armored vehicles were presented in the video published on VK including the Z-STS Akhmat and the Borz. The Z-STS Akhmat is a 6x6 armored vehicle produced by the Russian company Remdiesel.
The Z-STS Akhmat is built on the 6x6 chassis of a KamAZ-5350. Some design elements were probably borrowed from serial armored vehicles. It has the same protection as Typhoon and a 6×6 wheel arrangement. It can operate in temperatures of minus 50 to plus 50 degrees Centigrade and 4,500 meters high in the mountains. The vehicle can be airlifted by Il-76, An-124 aircraft, and transported by rail.
The Borz is a 4x4 armored vehicle that has a design similar to the Italian LMV 4x4 tactical armored vehicle. According to a military source, the vehicle was manufactured by the Chechen Defense Industry.
