The DITA, developed by Czech defense company Excalibur Army, is a highly advanced self-propelled artillery system designed for precision and efficiency. It utilizes NATO-standard 155mm ammunition and is built on the robust 8×8 Tatra chassis, which provides exceptional off-road mobility and high speed, allowing for rapid redeployment in diverse terrain. The system features a fully automated superstructure, enabling it to operate with a minimal crew of just two—a commander and a driver. Its advanced onboard control system allows quick targeting and firing processes, ensuring high accuracy and rapid response times.
The 155mm DITA self-propelled howitzer represents a cutting-edge evolution in modern artillery, designed to meet NATO standards for ammunition compatibility and operational efficiency. This advanced weapon system builds on the Czechoslovak legacy of truck-mounted howitzers, a concept renowned for its mobility and versatility, while introducing unprecedented levels of automation and autonomy in its operation.
Developed by the Czech company Excalibur Army, the DITA was first unveiled to the public in 2021. It marked a significant leap in artillery design by incorporating a fully autonomous superstructure, capable of functioning independently from the chassis. This innovation allows the system to be mounted not only on an 8×8 Tatra wheeled chassis but also on tracked or other suitable undercarriages, increasing its adaptability for various operational environments.
The DITA is equipped with a 155mm L45 gun, compatible with NATO-standard ammunition, enabling a firing range of up to 39 kilometers when using advanced projectiles. Its cutting-edge automation minimizes crew requirements to just two members—a driver and a commander—while ensuring rapid deployment, precision targeting, and high mobility in challenging terrains.
The system's Onboard Control System provides seamless operation, facilitating swift transitions between firing and mobility modes, as well as delivering exceptional accuracy. With these features, the DITA not only reflects the heritage of Czechoslovak artillery engineering but also positions itself as a forward-looking solution for modern military needs.
According to the pictures shared on November 15, 2024, the first DITA 155mm self-propelled howitzer has already been delivered to Ukraine. The Netherlands has been instrumental in facilitating this transfer, having ordered nine DITA systems from the Czech Republic for Ukraine in February 2024. These units were reportedly delivered by the summer of 2024. Additionally, in October 2024, the Netherlands announced plans to procure six more DITA howitzers for Ukraine, with deliveries anticipated by 2025.
This strategic acquisition underscores the Netherlands' commitment to bolstering Ukraine's defense capabilities through the provision of advanced artillery systems. The integration of the DITA howitzers into the Ukrainian National Guard is anticipated to enhance their operational effectiveness in ongoing and future engagements significantly.
The deployment of the DITA howitzers represents a notable advancement in Ukraine's artillery modernization efforts, providing a robust and mobile fire support platform capable of delivering precise and sustained firepower on the battlefield.
