Latest Batch of T-72B3 and T-90M Tanks Delivered to Russian Army with Enhanced Anti-Drone Technology.

The Russian company Uralvagonzavod (UVZ) announced on December 31 the delivery of the final batches of T-72B3 and T-90M tanks to the Ministry of Defense. These modern armored vehicles, produced by Uralvagonzavod, reflect Russia's ongoing efforts to modernize its armed forces in response to the growing challenges of contemporary battlefields. In addition to these deliveries, Uralvagonzavod refurbished 200 T-72 tanks into the T-72B3 mod. 2023 variant, manufactured between 60 and 80 new T-90M tanks, and converted several tank hulls into BMPT Terminators, enhancing the versatility of its armored fleet.

To fulfill these commitments, UVZ significantly increased its production capacity, an effort made difficult by rising demand and logistical challenges. November 2024 was particularly critical, highlighting an intense production pace at the company’s facilities. The T-72B3 and T-90M tanks delivered this year include key upgrades such as anti-drone FVP nets, enhanced rubber protection, electronic warfare systems, and visibility reduction measures to counter emerging threats effectively. These technological advancements improve their resilience against modern challenges.

The T-72B3, a modernized version of the Soviet-era T-72 tank, is distinguished by its upgraded armament and structural enhancements. Equipped with a 125mm 2A46M smoothbore cannon, it can engage targets up to 5 km away, supported by a Sosna-U thermal sight for day and night operations. Its Kontakt-5 reactive armor and Relikt side modules provide increased protection against anti-tank projectiles, while its 1,000-horsepower diesel engine ensures significant mobility, making it suitable for contemporary battlefield requirements.

The T-90M "Proryv" represents a substantial development within the T-90 series. It features a 125mm 2A82-1M cannon, also used on the T-14 Armata, paired with the Kalina fire control system and a multi-channel sight, offering precision and efficiency during engagements. Its defenses include Relikt reactive armor and anti-RPG grids, while its 1,130-horsepower engine delivers high mobility. Some variants are also equipped with the Arena-M active protection system, capable of intercepting nearby enemy munitions.

The Russian military has relied heavily on its tank fleet, including the T-72, T-80, and T-90, in the context of the conflict in Ukraine. However, this approach has resulted in significant losses, with approximately 2,700 tanks destroyed or captured between February 2022 and June 2024. To address these losses, Russia has utilized older vehicles from its stockpiles, many requiring substantial repairs. International sanctions have further complicated access to essential components, hindering both production and modernization efforts.

Despite these challenges, Uralvagonzavod has maintained a high production rate and integrated advanced technologies into its vehicles. The 2024 deliveries highlight Russia's efforts to modernize its arsenal, though logistical and industrial pressures remain significant obstacles. These developments underscore the growing importance of technological innovation in modern conflicts and the resilience of the Russian defense industry in navigating current challenges.
