Citing information from the Ukrainian armed forces, Russia was forced to deploy its reserves of T-62 main battle tanks in order to compensate for tank losses in the fighting in Ukraine. A video was published on Youtube showing the move by a train of T-62M and T-62MV tanks in Kamyansk-Shakhtinsk, Rostov, a Russian region bordering Ukraine.
The T-62M is a modernized version of the T-62 MBT that entered into service with the Russian army in 1961. The tank is always in service with the Russian army but in an upgraded or modernized version. The T-62M has the same armament as the first version of the T-62.
The T-62 is armed with a 115-mm two-axis stabilized smoothbore gun 2A20 (U5-TS). The second armament of the tank includes one 7.62 mm PKT machine gun mounted coaxially to the right of the main armament. A 12.7 mm DShKM MG machine gun can be mounted on the commander's cupola for the latest version of the T-62 variants.
The T-62M is fitted with a passive armor that is mounted to the glacis plate and around the forward part of the turret, consisting of steel with an additional layer of pheno-polyurethane inside. Additional armor is fitted under the forward part of the hull and a steel frame is provided between the floor and roof of the driver's compartment to help absorb the shock of a mine exploding under the vehicle.
The T-62MV is also an upgraded version of the T-62. The tank uses the same armament but it is fitted with "Kontakt-1" Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA) on the sides of the hull, the glacis plate, and in the front of the turret.
