Ukraine Integrates French AMX-10RC anti-tank vehicle with EW Jammers for Self-Propelled Artillery Role.

On December 2, 2024, an update shared by the X (formerly Twitter) account Praise the Steph revealed that the Ukrainian military has integrated French-supplied AMX-10RCR armored reconnaissance anti-tank vehicle, equipped with electronic warfare (EW) jammers into the 1st Battalion of the 37th Separate Marine Brigade. These vehicles are now being used as self-propelled artillery for indirect fire, marking a significant shift in their operational role. This adaptation highlights the growing importance of integrating advanced electronic warfare capabilities into combat vehicles, enhancing the operational flexibility and fire support of Ukrainian forces on the frontlines.

The AMX-10RCR is armed with a 105mm F2 gun, capable of firing a wide range of ammunition, including high-explosive, armor-piercing, and anti-tank rounds. This powerful main armament allows the vehicle to effectively engage a variety of targets, from armored vehicles and tanks to fortified positions. Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun, providing close-range firepower. The 105mm cannon is mounted on a fully stabilized turret, allowing for accurate firing even while the vehicle is in motion, which is critical in a fluid battlefield environment. The AMX-10 RC’s mobility is further enhanced by its six-wheel drive, enabling it to traverse both roads and rough terrain with ease, making it a highly versatile platform for both direct and indirect fire operations.

Traditionally, the AMX-10RC was used as an anti-tank reconnaissance vehicle, designed to scout the battlefield, identify enemy positions, and relay critical intelligence back to higher command. Its combination of firepower, mobility, and advanced observation systems, including day and night vision, made it an effective tool for reconnaissance and support. Its role was primarily to perform quick strikes against enemy armor and provide situational awareness for other units. However, the evolving needs of the Ukrainian military, particularly in the face of advanced Russian artillery and air defense systems, have led to a broader use of the AMX-10RC, now including its role as a self-propelled artillery platform.

The addition of EW jammers to these vehicles further enhances their operational capabilities. These systems allow the AMX-10RCs to disrupt enemy communications, radar, and targeting systems, providing a significant advantage in electronic warfare. In the context of the ongoing conflict, where both sides rely heavily on advanced electronic systems for command-and-control, surveillance, and targeting, this electronic warfare capability is a crucial force multiplier. It enables Ukrainian forces to reduce the effectiveness of enemy artillery and air support, while also disrupting their coordination and targeting efforts.

Since their delivery began in March 2023, a total of 38 AMX-10RCRs have been supplied to Ukraine, an upgraded version of the AMX-10RC. These vehicles have been gradually integrated into Ukraine’s military operations, with the 1st Battalion of the 37th Separate Marine Brigade becoming one of the first units to deploy them effectively in combat. The brigade has utilized the AMX-10RCRs not only for reconnaissance but also for providing critical fire support during offensive operations. The vehicles' ability to engage both in direct fire and indirect fire roles while also performing electronic warfare tasks has made them an essential component of Ukraine's evolving battlefield strategies.

Despite their strengths, the AMX-10RC is not without limitations. Its light aluminum armor offers minimal protection against larger caliber projectiles, which makes it vulnerable to heavy artillery and direct hits from tank guns. However, its speed, mobility, and versatility allow it to avoid direct confrontations when necessary, using its agility to stay out of range while providing fire support and electronic warfare capabilities.

The integration of these vehicles into the 1st Battalion of the 37th Separate Marine Brigade exemplifies Ukraine's strategic approach to integrating advanced Western systems into its military, adapting them to the specific challenges of the ongoing conflict. With their enhanced capabilities, the AMX-10RCRs are proving to be invaluable assets, offering a mix of firepower, mobility, and electronic warfare that is essential in the modern combat environment.
