Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, 2022, both countries have experienced significant losses in military equipment. As of September 8, 2024, Ukraine has lost a total of 919 tanks, including 639 destroyed, 73 damaged, 71 abandoned, and 136 captured by Russian forces. Meanwhile, Russia has reportedly lost 3,368 tanks, with 2,317 destroyed, 156 damaged, 364 abandoned, and 531 captured by Ukrainian forces.

A breakdown of Ukraine's tank losses shows that 43 are Leopard tanks supplied by Western allies. Among these, three Leopard 1A5 tanks were lost, with two destroyed and one damaged. The Leopard 2A4 model has seen 21 losses: 10 destroyed, 7 damaged, and 4 both damaged and abandoned. There have been 12 Leopard 2A6 losses, including 6 destroyed, 4 damaged, and 2 both damaged and abandoned. Additionally, seven Stridsvagn 122 tanks, a Swedish variant of the Leopard 2, were reported lost, with one destroyed, one damaged, and five both damaged and abandoned.

Germany has significantly contributed to Ukraine's defense by providing various Leopard tanks since the invasion began. In cooperation with Denmark, Germany has supplied 58 Leopard 1A5 main battle tanks and plans to deliver an additional 77 tanks, along with spare parts and ammunition. Germany has also provided 18 Leopard 2A6 tanks as part of a joint project with other Leopard 2 operators, along with the necessary ammunition and spare parts. Germany's support to Ukraine includes not only direct deliveries from its Federal Armed Forces' stocks but also funding from security capacity-building initiatives. Overall, Germany's military assistance to Ukraine totals approximately €28 billion, with further commitments expected.

In collaboration with Denmark and the Netherlands, Germany is also involved in a project to provide 100 Leopard 1A5 tanks: 20 from the Netherlands, 30 from Denmark, and 50 from Germany. Poland has contributed 14 Leopard 2A4 tanks, while Spain initially delivered 10 Leopard 2A4 tanks and later provided 19 more. This delivery alone could replace all Leopard 2A4 tanks lost by Ukrainian forces since the conflict began. Germany is also partly funding the refurbishment of these tanks. Additionally, the Netherlands and Denmark have committed to delivering 14 Leopard 2A4 tanks (seven from each country), which have undergone refurbishment and testing. The Dutch Ministry of Defense announced this delivery on July 25, 2024.

Canada and Norway have each committed to supplying eight Leopard 2A4 tanks to Ukraine. Germany has also committed to providing 18 Leopard 2A6 tanks and funding the refurbishment of three tanks from Portugal's fleet. Sweden has provided 10 Stridsvagn 122 tanks, a variant of the Leopard 2, to support Ukraine's armored forces.
