Ukraine strikes for the fist time S-400 Air Defense System on Russian Territory with US HIMARS.


On June 3, 2024, Ukrainian forces reportedly destroyed for the first time an S-400 air defense missile system on Russian territory using a U.S. M142 HIMARS rocket launcher. This marks the first time such an event has occurred, showcasing the escalating capabilities of Ukraine's military in the ongoing conflict.

According to information circulating on social networks, the destruction was achieved using a GMLRS rocket fired from an American-made M142 HIMARS Multiple Launch Rocket System. The precision strike targeted the sophisticated Russian S-400 air defense system, dealing a substantial blow to Russian air defense capabilities.

The attack resulted in the confirmed destruction or severe damage of at least two transporter erector launchers (TELs) and two support vehicles integral to the operation of the S-400 system. Additionally, another Kamaz truck was reported damaged in the strike.

The S-400, known for its advanced tracking and targeting capabilities, is a critical component of Russia's air defense strategy. Its loss represents a notable victory for Ukrainian forces, highlighting their growing proficiency with advanced Western-supplied military technology.

The S-400 Triumf, developed by Russia's Almaz Central Design Bureau, is one of the most advanced and versatile long-range air defense systems in the world. It is designed to engage a variety of aerial targets, including aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles. The system is equipped with a sophisticated radar complex capable of detecting targets at distances of up to 600 kilometers and engaging them at ranges of up to 400 kilometers. The S-400 can simultaneously track and engage multiple targets, employing a combination of different missiles to optimize its defensive capabilities against diverse threats​​.

Key features of the S-400 include its multi-function radar, autonomous detection and targeting systems, anti-aircraft missile launchers, and command and control center. The system is capable of firing four different missile types with varying ranges and capabilities, ensuring a layered defense. It can target stealth aircraft and is resistant to electronic countermeasures, making it a formidable component of modern air defense. Additionally, the S-400's modular design allows for easy integration with other air defense systems, enhancing its operational flexibility and effectiveness on the battlefield​​.

The Biden administration has recently authorized Ukraine to use U.S.-provided weapons to strike targets on Russian territory near the Kharkiv region. This decision marks a significant shift in U.S. policy, which previously prohibited the use of American arms for offensive operations inside Russia.

The authorization allows Ukrainian forces to target Russian military assets that are directly involved in the attack on Kharkiv. This includes shooting down missiles aimed at the city, targeting troops massed near the border, and intercepting bombers launching attacks. However, Ukraine is still restricted from using these weapons to hit civilian infrastructure or launching long-range missiles deep into Russia​​.

This move is partly a response to the intensified Russian offensive in the Kharkiv region and the increasing concentration of Russian troops there. By allowing these strikes, the U.S. aims to bolster Ukraine's defensive capabilities and counter the immediate threats posed by Russian forces in the area​.

This incident underscores the intensifying nature of the conflict and the increasing use of high-tech weaponry. It also raises questions about the potential for further escalations and the broader implications for regional security.
