The donation of the Stridsvagn 122 tanks followed an announcement made by the Army Recognition editorial team on February 27, 2023. Sweden, in partnership with other European nations, pledged to supply Ukraine with 10 Strv 122 MBTs, as well as MIM-23 Hawk and IRIS-T air defense systems.

Over the past year and a half, Sweden's support for Ukraine has been substantial. As of February 2022, the total assistance offered by Sweden had exceeded €900 million. Over 60% of this aid, amounting to more than €570 million, has been channeled towards military support.

Despite the donation of the Strv 122 tanks, the Swedish armed forces' defense capabilities remain unimpaired, thanks to their sizeable fleet of 120 Leopard 2A5 (Strv 122) tanks, as cited from open source information.

The Stridsvagn 122 is a renowned main battle tank used by the Swedish Army, built under license as a version of the German-made Leopard 2A5. However, it boasts several upgrades, including additional armor and enhancements that cater specifically to the requirements of the Swedish military.

The Leopard 2A5 is recognized globally for its effective combination of firepower, protection, and mobility and is employed by numerous nations. Its armament includes a formidable 120mm smoothbore gun, capable of firing a range of rounds, encompassing high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) and sabot rounds.

The Strv 122 retains this formidable firepower but has been further enhanced with substantial improvements in armor protection and additional modular armor. Other innovative features include advanced command, control, and fire control systems. Notably, the Swedish iteration incorporates a battlefield management system, enabling real-time data sharing with other units, an advancement not found on all Leopard 2A5 versions.
