Ukrainian National Guard strengthens command operations with new Novator-2 KShM vehicles.

On December 18, 2024, the Ukrainian National Guard received its first batch of Novator-2 command and staff vehicles (KShM), developed by Ukrainian Armor in collaboration with the National Guard. These vehicles are designed to enhance command and control in combat zones while providing protection for unit commanders. The Novator-2 retains the essential characteristics of its predecessor, including mobility, ballistic and mine protection, and additional enhancements for operational flexibility.

The interior of the Novator-2 KShM includes four operator workstations equipped with monitors and secure communications, with the potential for integrating electronic warfare (EW) equipment. The vehicle retains its V-shaped hull, providing protection against 7.62 mm ammunition and the detonation of two RGD-5 grenades. Its 5 cm thick bulletproof windows further enhance crew safety. Additionally, the roof can mount a rotating combat module armed with a 12.7 mm machine gun or an automatic grenade launcher.

The Novator-2 is based on a reinforced Ford F-550 chassis and powered by a 6.7-liter V8 turbo diesel engine producing 300 horsepower. It uses a six-speed automatic transmission to reach speeds of up to 140 km/h and has an operational range of 500 kilometers. The vehicle has a length of 6.5 meters, a width of 2.35 meters, and a height of 2.3 meters. Its weight increased from 7,945 kg to 9,660 kg, while its payload capacity rose from 1,845 kg to 3,340 kg. The chassis has been lengthened by 10 cm to accommodate ten passengers, compared to five in the previous model.

The Novator-2 could also integrate the AD Kraken Counter FPV F3 electronic warfare system developed by Kvertus, available in two variants: the M30 and M50. The M30 has six jamming channels with a power output of 30 watts per channel, while the M50 increases the power to 50 watts per channel. Both systems can operate for up to 12 hours with periodic breaks and are capable of jamming FPV drones across three radio bands. These systems offer omnidirectional and directional jamming capabilities to counter aerial threats.

The Novator-2 has been tested in combat, including incidents where it sustained damage from FPV drones but remained operational for several kilometers. Field conditions such as movement and enemy countermeasures can influence the effectiveness of its EW systems. The vehicle is designed for roles including troop transport, evacuation, and counter-drone operations.

A medical evacuation version of the Novator-2 has also been introduced. This variant can transport six wounded soldiers seated or four lying down. Its interior has been adapted with medical compartments and IV hooks, maintaining the vehicle’s standard protection and EW capabilities. The medical version was tested for two months in combat zones before entering mass production.

The Novator-2, first introduced at the MSPO exhibition in Poland in September 2023, incorporates structural modifications based on field feedback. These include an improved suspension system with reinforced axles and air springs, enhancing maneuverability and off-road performance. Despite its increased weight, the vehicle retains its operational flexibility, though careful handling is required in off-road conditions.

The National Guard plans to integrate Novator-2 vehicles across its combat brigades. Ukrainian Armor continues to adapt the design based on operational feedback to meet evolving requirements. This ongoing development reflects the vehicle's role in addressing both immediate and long-term military needs in high-intensity operational environments.
