In the South of Ukraine, the Naval Infantry Unit of the Ukrainian armed forces is currently training and learning the use of Mastiff PPV (Protected Patrol Vehicle) vehicles in the context of operational and tactical missions. Ukrainian soldiers must learn to use its new vehicles which are totally different from Russian-made combat vehicles.
These training will also allow Ukrainian soldiers to improve their personal skills in order to perform correctly combat missions and ensure their safety. The war in Ukraine is different from others, so Ukrainian soldiers need to learn a lot, improve their professional skills, their professionalism, and use the acquired combat experience, to adapt NATO tactical methods to the modern combat battlefield.
Citing information from Ukrainian officers, the Mastiff is very good, works great, it is maneuverable, fast, and reliable. Compared to the old Soviet combat vehicles, British Mastiff offers a high level of comfort and protection.
One of the key features of the Mastiff is the protection, during the military operation in Afghanistan; there were cases when these combat vehicles were blown up by mines, without any of the crew members being killed.
The Mastiff PPV (Patrol Protected Vehicle) is a combat vehicle that was used by the British soldiers deployed for combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, it entered into service in 2006. The vehicle is based on the American Cougar but is fitted with additional features to suit the requirements of UK forces. The Cougar was developed by the American company Force Protection.
The Mastiff has a conventional layout with the engine at the front, the crew in the middle, and the troop's compartment at the rear. It has a crew of two including a driver and commander and the rear part of the vehicle can accommodate up to eight infantrymen. The vehicle offers a high level of protection, especially against mines and IEDs (Improvised Explosive Device) threats. The armor of the vehicle incorporates a Dyneema Unidirectional design to improve the protection of the vehicle against landmines, fire, or explosions.
The Mastiff PPV is motorized with a Caterpillar C-7 diesel engine developing 330 hp. It can reach a top road speed of 105 km/h with a maximum cruising range of up to 1,000 km.
