Over the past week, Russian forces have focused significant efforts on this area, with indications suggesting that they are preparing for a larger offensive targeting the town of Pokrovsk. As part of these operations, Russian troops have partially encircled the town of Selydove and are expected to attempt to seize control of it in the near future.

Meanwhile, Russian forces have made slow advances into the center of Toretsk, another key location in the region. However, progress remains limited, and their positions in the town remain vulnerable to Ukrainian counter-attacks.

In southern Ukraine, Russian troops seized the town of Vuhledar at the start of October. Since then, they have only made incremental progress beyond the town, which sits at a strategic crossroads between the Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk fronts.

Additionally, there are signs of renewed Russian efforts in the Zaporizhzhia region. Reports suggest that Russian forces have captured the village of Kamianske, which lies on the crucial road linking Zaporizhzhia and Melitopol. This part of the front has seen little movement for over a year, and it remains unclear whether Russian forces can maintain momentum for further operations in the area.

Analysis

Russia's focus on the Avdiivka-Pokrovsk sector in the Donetsk region comes as part of a larger campaign to solidify its control over eastern Ukraine. This area is strategically critical because it serves as a logistical hub for Ukrainian military operations in the region, particularly in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia. If Russian forces succeed in capturing Pokrovsk, they would disrupt Ukrainian supply routes and potentially isolate key defensive positions, making it harder for Ukraine to resupply and coordinate forces along the eastern front.

In addition to these local operations, Russia’s broader goals in Ukraine seem to include consolidating gains in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia, regions that have seen fierce fighting since the start of the war. Recent gains in Vuhledar and Kamianske underscore Russia’s attempt to create momentum along these fronts. The capture of Vuhledar gives Russian forces a foothold at the intersection of two critical frontlines, while gains in Kamianske, near the Zaporizhzhia-Melitopol road, could pave the way for a renewed push toward Zaporizhzhia, a vital industrial hub.

However, the situation remains fluid and contested. Ukraine has been reinforcing its positions, moving elite units like the Kara-Dag Brigade to strengthen defenses around key towns. The Ukrainian military is also likely focusing on counteroffensive operations in other sectors, such as the north around Kursk, which further complicates the situation.
