The
Russian-designed 6B47 helmet, made for ‘Ratnik’ (‘Warrior’)
combat gear, is now undergoing testing that should be completed by the
end of the year. The product, designed by the Central Research Institute
for Precision Machine Building (TsNIITochMash), has no equivalents in
the world. |

According to Oleg Faustov, chief designer of military and combat equipment systems for TsNIITochMash, the new all-purpose military helmet is suitable not only for the infantry, but also for paratroopers and even special units. The 6B47 helmet, produced by TsNIITochMash, will be part of Ratnik combat gear. “The helmet weighs only one kilogram. Even with all of its defensive attributes, the helmet weighs less than its American counterpart, which is smaller but weighs 1.5 kilograms,” Oleg Faustov explained to the newspaper VPK. In addition to clothing, Ratnik combat gear includes 40 items such as firearms, sighting systems, body armor, and electronic communications and navigation systems. The average warranty of Ratnik gear is five years. “For the first time in Russia, a technology was developed to create a hard-dome helmet without any deterioration of ballistic fabric. Previously, aramid fabrics were inundated with special compounds and then pressed to form a plastic. But this plastic was always less effective than the original layers. Our helmet has a hard outer shell with layers of unadulterated aramid ballistic fabric underneath,” explained Oleg Faustov. The Ministry of Defense and TsNIITochMash intend to finish testing the helmet by the end of the year. During the tests, the safety characteristics of the helmet will be evaluated in a variety of temperature and weather conditions. The helmet should protect a soldier in a temperature ranging from -50 to 50 degrees and in rain, snow, and even salt water. If the tests go according to plan, the unique helmet will be supplied to troops at the beginning of next year. The helmet was shown for the first time at the TsNIITochMash stand during the Engineering Technologies-2014 exhibition. The Central Research Institute for Precision Machine Building (TsNIITochMash) designs and manufactures a wide range of weapons and military equipment for various types of troops. The enterprise has made more than 120 kinds of small arms, artillery, and anti-tank weapons, as well as combat hardware and various forms of ammunition. |
