Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, the use of drones—whether for reconnaissance, surveillance, or attack—has significantly transformed battlefield dynamics. These devices, due to their low cost and high ability to operate stealthily and accurately, have enabled both regular and irregular forces to conduct targeted strikes while minimizing risks to their operators. However, their proliferation has led to an urgent need for effective and cost-efficient countermeasures. Anti-drone systems have become essential to protect critical infrastructure, ground troops, and sensitive equipment. Finding suitable solutions that combine effectiveness, rapid deployment, and controlled costs has become imperative for armed forces, especially given the variety of drones in use, ranging from small modified commercial devices to more sophisticated systems.

At IDEX 2025, Poland's PGZ showcased the WLKM, a versatile and cost-effective counter-UAS solution. This multi-barrel heavy machine gun stands out for its impressive firepower and mobility, positioning it as a valuable asset in modern defense strategies.

The WLKM, originally, is a 12.7mm x 99 NATO (.50 BMG) multi-barrel Gatling-style machine gun, powered by an externally driven electric system. With a rate of fire reaching up to 3,600 rounds per minute, the WLKM delivers powerful and rapid suppression capabilities, ideal for neutralizing aerial threats such as drones. The machine gun’s practical range extends to 2,200 meters, enabling effective engagement of both airborne and ground targets.

A key feature of the WLKM system is its flexibility. While PGZ has integrated the system with various effectors, these are not yet fully integrated into the WLKM setup. However, the main advantage of the system lies in its mobility and cost efficiency, making it an attractive solution for units requiring rapid deployment and adaptable defense capabilities. The system is designed for use on a variety of platforms, including ground vehicles, boats, and even aerial platforms such as the W-3PL Głuszec helicopter.

Despite its impressive rate of fire and operational versatility, the WLKM stands out in its affordability compared to other systems with similar capabilities. This makes it an attractive option for armed forces seeking effective counter-UAS technology that doesn’t come with a prohibitive price tag.

PGZ’s presence at IDEX 2025 highlights its commitment to providing cutting-edge solutions for modern defense challenges, with the WLKM representing a significant leap in counter-UAS technology. With its exceptional mobility, rapid fire rate, and cost-effective nature, the WLKM is poised to play an important role in future defense strategies.
