The robot features a trademarked two-wheel, single-axle design, plus aggressive wheels and a distinctive stabilizing tail that produce superior obstacle climbing ability. Dismounted military personnel will use the robot to conduct surveillance and search high-risk environments for adversaries, weapons caches and explosives. SWAT teams will use the XL to quickly gain video and audio reconnaissance during warrant-service operations, hostage rescues, barricaded subject callouts and remote inspections of suspected explosive devices. The Recon Scout XL weighs 1.4lbs (.64kg), and can be thrown up to 30 feet (9.1m). It is equipped with an infrared optical system that enables the operator to see in complete darkness, and a sophisticated microphone that can listen in on quiet conversations. The XL can transmit audio and video up to 300 (91.5m) feet to a handheld operator control unit, or up to 1,000 feet (305 m) to a mobile command post equipped with a Command Monitoring Station. The robot may be specified in any of three predetermined transmitting frequencies, enabling operators to use up to three robots in the same environment at the same time. “The environments in which our police and military operate are highly dangerous and are often littered with debris and clothing that can entangle the treads on larger tracked robots,” said Alan Bignall, President and CEO of ReconRobotics. “Our two-wheeled Recon Scout XL is designed to ride over these obstacles, enabling operators to maintain a safe standoff distance as they conduct reconnaissance in these challenging environments.” More than 3,900 of the company’s micro-robot systems are deployed by the U.S. military and allied friendly forces, and by more than 700 police and counterterrorism teams, worldwide. Nearly 2,000 of these robots are currently deployed with dismounted troops in Afghanistan for use in compound clearing and reconnaissance operations. |
