Russia creates Udar combat ground robot - Part 1

Russia is developing Udar (Strike) ground robot. It is of the same class as Nerekhta, Soratnik and Uran robotic systems, expert Denis Fedutinov writes in the Army Standard. Udar is developed by the Signal Pan-Russian Research Institute of Precision Systems Concern. Impulse-2, ROKAD, TsAPK, Kuntsevo Design Bureau and GNIITs RT are also engaged. The prototype has been created. Various options of its interaction with other technical devices are tested.

The Udar attack robot is created on a BMP-3 chassis. The platform was designed in Soviet time by the Special Machine-Building Design Bureau in Kurgan and is produced by Kurganmashzavod. The new technical solution accelerated the design and ensured a high unification with other hardware operated by the Russian armed forces. The tracked combat vehicle weighs 18.7 tons. It is powered by a 500 hp UTD-29 diesel engine.

BMP-3 running gear with independent torsion bar suspension comprises six pairs of coupled rubber-coated rollers and rubber-metal tracks. The fuel tank of 700 liters provides for a 600-km autonomy. The vehicle can overcome 2.5-meter wide ditches and ascend 30 degrees with a 30-degree side slope.

Udar is controlled by a set of round-view video cameras, remote and automatic controls, communications, as well as various mechanisms.

The design focused on the remote control by the operator and automatic control without human interference. In the latter case, the control system creates a 3D terrain map by data obtained from sensors and calculates the optimal route according to the terrain relief and combat mission parameters.

Radio silence promotes the stealth features of the robot. However, the operator can restore the telecom guidance regime, if necessary. The remote control system is carried by an Ural-4320 6x6 truck.

Udar is installed in a remotely controlled Boomerang-BM combat module designed by the Instrument Manufacturing Design Bureau in Tula and produced by the Shcheglovsky Val plant. The module was designed for prospective armor, including the infantry fighting vehicle on the Kurganets platform and the armored personnel carrier on the Boomerang platform.

Boomerang-BM has a block-modular design. It is armed with a 30mm 2A42 gun with a firing range of 4,000 meters. The magazine of 500 rounds is carried in an isolated compartment. There is also a coaxial upgraded 7.62mm PKTM machinegun fed with 2,000 cartridges and four launchers of antitank Kornet missiles with a range of 8,000-10,000 meters (depending on the modification).

An integrated optical-electronic system searches for targets and provides guidance. It includes sensors of the visible and heat bands and a laser aimer for Kornet missiles.
