Russian Strategic Missile Forces have received 70 BPDM Typhoon-M anti-sabotage armored vehicles



According to information published by the Russian Ministry of Defense on January 9, 2021, the Russian Strategic Missile Forces have received 70 BPDM Typhoon-M 8x8 armored vehicles designed to conduct radio, optical and infrared surveillance and reconnaissance missions, it is also used as a counter-sabotage vehicle.

The Strategic Missile Forces are a specific branch of the Russian armed forces branch that controls Russia's land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). Russia’s Strategic Missile Force currently operates eight types of missile systems. They include five silo-based types: Voyevoda, Stiletto, Topol-M, Yars, and Avangard. The mobile grouping comprises road-mobile Topol, Topol-M, and Yars RS-24 ICBMs (InterContinental Ballistic Missiles).

The Typhoon-M also called BPDM 15TM56M counter-sabotage measures and protection of mobile strategic missile systems is used by Russian Strategic Missile Forces to guard RS-24 Yars mobile nuclear intercontinental ballistic missiles.

The Typhoon-M was specially developed for the Russian Strategic Missile Forces based on the BTR-82 armored personnel carrier 'APC) chassis. It controls positional areas of the forces using radar, optical and infrared bands and is able to destroy subversion and reconnaissance groups of the enemy.

The Typhoon-M is equipped with different types of reconnaissance and surveillance equipment including TKN-4S night vision sight and Kredo-1 ground surveillance radar. The vehicle is also equipped with an electronic warfare suite able to detect or jam hostile radio communications or electronic attacks.

One of the main features of the Typhoon-M is the onboard Eleron-3SV drone used to perform reconnaissance and surveillance missions. The small unmanned surveillance aircraft has a maximum range of 25 km but is generally used to carry out missions at a maximum range of 5 km during two hours. The drone has a camera able to save footage on an internal memory card or broadcast full-motion video back to the command unit with a maximum range of 5 km.

The BPDM has a crew of five including a driver, commander, gunner, radar operator, and drone operator. The hull of the vehicle can also accommodate four military personnel. For its self-protection, the .vehicle is fitted with a remotely operated weapon station armed with one PKTM 7.62mm machine gun.
