The Belgian firearms manufacturer FN Herstal has launched in 2008 the development of a new family of Remotely operated controlled Weapon Stations (RWS) starting with the deFNder™ Light followed in 2010 by the deFNder™ Medium. Both, deFNder Light and deFNder Medium can be integrated into all types of tracked or wheeled armored vehicles as well as light tactical vehicles allowing firing under the armor of the vehicle. The deFNder family is built from light but sturdy aluminum. In option, deFNder family can be equipped with a wide range of accessories including day and night infrared sighting systems, target-tracking and image stabilization functions, ballistic protection, higher capacity ammunition boxes (up to 500 .50-calibre rounds), and interfaces with sensors such as BMS, SADLS, LWR and radar. The standard day sight provides Narrow and Wide Field of Views for standard NATO detection, recognition and identification of targets at high ranges. The Samson Mk I Remote Weapon Station is a dual-axis, gyro-stabilized remote-controlled weapon system (RWS) capable of mounting multiple weapons. The Mk I is lighter than manned turrets and does not require penetration into the vehicle hull, saving significant interior space. The gunner and critical electronic equipment remain protected inside the vehicle under armor. The integration of ammunition chutes in special shafts provides reliable protection and uninterrupted firepower. Based on the Samson Mk I, the Mk II offers improved combat capability with a lower silhouette, optional armor protection, improved hit accuracy, under-armor reloading, increased rigidity and higher gun elevation capabilities.

Sight and Sensors:
Two electro-optic sights for the independent commander and gunner surveillance and an auto tracker for fast maneuvering targets further optimize the operational capabilities of the RWS. Hit accuracy is significantly improved by the RWS’s dual-axis stabilization system.

The R-200 is a single weapon station capable of operating most 7.62 mm or 5.56 mm automatic weapons. First round hit probability is provided by a ballistic solution taking into account weapons, ammunition, range and ambient environment. The optronics of the FLW 200 are located in a container mounted at the right side of the gun, whereas the ammo box is located on the left side. The optronics include a color CCD camera with x10 magnification and a thermal imager, which is cooled unlike the one of the FLW 100. This increases identification range to 2 kilometers (1.2 mi).
