The
120M Motor Grader (MG) is a six-wheeled, commercial, construction grader
for use by engineering military units. The vehicle is designed and manufactured
by the Company Caterpillar. The 120M Motor Grader features all-wheel
drive, articulated frame steer, pneumatic tires, electrohydraulic joystick
control operation, and an automatic power shift transmission with eight
forward and six reverse speeds. The military version of this equipment
has several additional benefits over the commercial such as more reliable
performance in extreme weather and an armored crew protection kit that
can be installed. The new high-tech grader uses six computers to operate.
The 120M Motor
Grader with ROPS/FOPS removed is designed to be capable of roll-on/roll-off
transportation by C-130J, C-5 av-17 military transport aircraft. The
120M Motor Grade is in service with the U.S. army. The first vehicle
was delivered in September 2012 to the 130th Engineer Brigade of U.S.
army. The South Dakota Army National Guard’s 842nd Engineer Company
is the first Army National Guard unit to receive four new 120M motorized
road graders during a fielding ceremony May 17, 2012, in Sturgis, S.D.

and protection |
The
120M Motor Grader is equipped with a completely enclosed rollover
protective structure/falling object protective structure/falling
object protective structure (ROPS/FOPS) cab, with air conditioning,
heating, one primary door, and one secondary exit. The 120M
front frame is a formed structural carbon steel tube. Advanced
fabrication technology significantly reduces the number of weld
joints, which more evenly distributes stress loads. The result
is a robust machine that delivers the durability you expect
from Caterpillar. The armored crew protection kit (CPK) on the
120M was developed with the Troops’s protection and survivability
in mind. The armored cab provides the operator with 360°
protection, including the roof and the door, from small arms
and fragmentation threats. An emergency egress hatch is provided
thru the roof and is accessible from both the inside by the
operator and from the outside by rescue personnel. The transparent
armor provides excellent operator visibility of the machine
and surrounding work area. These features of the CPK allow the
soldier to complete military tasks safely and effectively.

Mobility |
The
120M combines power management with ACERT™ Technology
to deliver maximum power and efficiency while reducing the environmental
impact. The C6.6 engine with ACERT Technology uses multiple
injection fuel delivery to precisely shape the combustion cycle.
Several small ignitions lower combustion chamber temperatures,
generates fewer emissions and optimizes fuel combustion. Bottom
line: more work output for your fuel cost. |
Accessories |
The
120M MG features a revolutionary cab design that provides unmatched
comfort, visibility and ease of use, making the operator more
confident and productive. Two electro-hydraulic joysticks reduce
hand and wrist movement as much as 78% compared to conventional
lever controls for greatly enhanced operator efficiency. The
intuitive pattern is easy to learn and provides the precise
implement control you expect from Caterpillar. The Cat®
Comfort Series suspension seat has an ergonomic high-back design,
with extra thick contoured cushions and infinitely adjustable
lumbar support that evenly distributes the operator’s
weight. Multiple seat controls and armrests are easy to adjust
for optimal support and comfort all day. The optional air suspension
seat enhances ride quality for additional comfort. |
Combat
use |
The
120M MG provides coarse and fine grading, low- and high-bank sloping,
flat- and V-ditching, and scarifying materials to support military
road, bridge, and airfield construction. |
