As 2016 comes to an end, here is an overview of the top ten naval defense stories we published this year, based on the number of readers for each story. As you can see, next generation anti-ship missiles from Russia, China and the United States drew a lot of interest among Navy Recognition readers. Future procurement programmes in Canada (CSC) and Australia (SEA5000) were other topics that drew a lot of attention.

#1 - 3M22 Zircon Hypersonic Missile in Development Testing for Russian Navy Kirov-class Cruiser
February 2016 - Russian cutting-edge hypersonic missile 3M22 of the 3K22 Zircon system is in the development trials. The Project 11442 (NATO reporting name: Kirov-class) Pyotr Veliky nuclear-powered missile cruiser will carry the type following its upgrade, a shipbuilding industry source told TASS on Friday. |

#2 - JMSDF Appointed the First Female Officer to Command a Destroyer
March 2016 - The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) appointed Commander Miho Otani as the commanding officer aboard Asagiri-class destroyer Yamagiri (DD-152) on 29 February 2016. Cmdr. Otani becomes the first woman to command a major surface combatant ship in the JMSDF. |

#3 - DCNS Confident its FREMM is the Right Solution for the Royal Canadian Navy CSC Program
May 2016 - The Canadian Surface Combatant (CSC) is the Royal Canadian Navy procurement program that will replace the Iroquois class Destroyers and Halifax class Frigates with up to 15 new ships in about the mid-2020s. Navy Recognition contacted DCNS Canada's head, Olivier Casenave-Péré, to see where the French shipbuilder chances stand as the Canadian Government is considering changing course on the CSC program. |

#4 - Analysis: 3K22 and 3M22 Zircon, the Next Generation Hypersonic Missile of the Russian Navy
April 2016 - Work to create the latest 3K-22 multi-service missile complex armed with Zircon (sometimes spelled Tsirkon) 3M-22 missiles and designed by NPO Mashinostroeniya Military-Industrial Corporation in the town of Reutov in Moscow region has been ongoing since 2011. The Military-Industrial Courier newspaper said the 3M-22 complex is armed with an anti-ship missile which is a continuation of heavy missiles Bazalt, Granit, and Onyx to destroy surface-going naval and ground targets at a distance of 300-400 kilometers. |

January 2016 - The French Navy (Marine Nationale) has released a series of nice pictures showing the Charles de Gaulle Carrier Strike Group (CSG) underway in the Arabian/Persian Gulf. The French CSG is currently is currently deployed in the area in support of coalition operations against Daesh in Iraq and Syria. |

January 2016 - At the Surface Navy Association's (SNA) National Symposium currently held near Washington DC, Lockheed Martin is showcasing for the first time a scale model representative of the MMSC (Multi-Mission Surface Combatant) being offered to the Royal Saudi Navy as part of a modernization program of the Saudi navy's eastern fleet called SNEP II (Saudi Naval Expansion Program). |

#8 - First Picture of China's New YJ-12A Anti-Ship Missile During Launch Revealed
October 2016 - Ahead of Airshow China 2016 due to start this week in Zuhai, the first ever picture showing a YJ-12A new generation surface launched anti-ship missile has been released. The YJ-12A is the latest supersonic anti-ship missile of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). It was unveiled for the first time last year during the victory day parade. |

#9 - Exclusive: Pictures of the First LRASM Surface Launch Test at Sea
August 2016 - Navy Recognition obtained from Lockheed Martin some exclusive pictures showing the first Long Range Anti-Ship Missile (LRASM) surface-launch test at sea. The pictures show the LRASM being launched from a Mk 41 vertical launch system (VLS). Lockheed Martin first issued a press release about this test in July this year. |

#10 - Australia Shortlisted Navantia Fincantieri and BAE Systems for the SEA5000 ASW Frigate Program
April 2016 - The Australian Governement announced the designs shortlisted for the SEA5000 ASW Frigate program. First pass approval for the Future Frigates. Three designers – BAE Systems with the Type 26 Frigate; Fincantieri with the FREMM Frigate, and Navantia with a redesigned F100 – have been short-listed to refine their designs. The frigates will all be built in Adelaide, incorporating the Australian-developed CEA Phased-Array Radar. |
