The return of the Marshal Shaposhnikov frigate of project 1155M to the constant readiness force of the fleet was a major event. The warship was overhauled and upgraded to carry Kalibr and Uran missiles, as well as anti-ship Onyx missiles. The frigate got a new artillery gun and radio-technical equipment.
The Pacific fleet prepared for the first launches of Kalibr missiles. Pop-up tests were successfully held in early April. A mockup of the cruise missile was fired by the frigate to check the universal vertical launcher. It splashed down close to the frigate after the engine stopped. No tests of the kind have been held before.
Live fire at a coastal and then sea target confirmed the reliability and precision of Kalibr missiles. Safe trajectories of over one thousand kilometers were designed for each test launch of the seaborne cruise missile.
The upgrade of the Marshal Shaposhnikov has justified itself and confirmed that big antisubmarine ships of project 1155 with a major displacement are a convenient and reliable platform for precision weapons, including prospective artillery guns, modern radio-technical, and antisubmarine arms. The potential of the warships has not been exhausted and a prudent approach will keep them in the Navy. Russian shipbuilders acquired practical experience during the upgrade of the Marshal Shaposhnikov and will use it in other warships.
The modernization of Soviet-built warships shows how prudent investment of relatively small funds can multiply the effectiveness of the ship. Besides the Marshal Shaposhnikov, the Smerch Ovod-class small missile ship has been upgraded and operates in Kamchatka. It received 16 launchers of Uran cruise missiles and a modern artillery gun.
The modernization will continue. It has been decided to overhaul and upgrade the Admiral Vinogradov big antisubmarine ship of project 1155. The concept of the upgraded warship is being finalized. It has to increase the number of missile arms and air defense. Each upgraded warship — both the Marshal Shaposhnikov and Admiral Vinogradov will be unique, as seaborne weapons are developing and upgrading.
Planned modernization and rearmament of an Antey-class SSGN of project 949A is ongoing.
Admiral Vinogradov is an Udaloy-class destroyer of the Russian Navy; it is currently active with the Russian Pacific Fleet. It is named for Admiral Nikolai Ignatevich Vinogradov.
Russian Udaloy-class destroyer Admiral Vinogradov is 163m in length and has a displacement of 7570 tons. She is manned by a crew of 300 including officers and sailors.
The Udaloy class, Russian designations Project 1155 Fregat and Project 11551 Fregat-M, are series of anti-submarine guided-missile destroyers built for the Soviet Navy, seven of which are currently in service with the Russian Navy. Twelve ships were built between 1980 and 1991, while the thirteenth ship built to a modified design, known as Udaloy II class, followed in 1999. They complement the Sovremennyy-class destroyers in anti-aircraft and anti-surface warfare operations.
