The JAS 39 Gripen is a single-engine multirole fighter manufactured by the Swedish aerospace company Saab. It was designed to replace the Saab 35 Draken and 37 Viggen in the Swedish Air Force. Gripen is a new generation, multi-role fighter aircraft which uses state-of-the-art technology. It is capable of performing an extensive range of Air-to-Air, Air-to-Surface and reconnaissance missions employing the most modern range of weapons. Gripen is designed to meet the demands of current and future threats, while at the same time meeting strict requirements for flight safety, reliability, training efficiency and low operating costs. The Gripen fighter is in service with a number of air forces: Swedish, Czech Republic and Hungarian Air Forces and has also been ordered by the South African Air Force and the Royal Thai Air Force. The UK Empire Test Pilots’ School (ETPS) is operating Gripen as its advanced fast jet platform for test pilots worldwide. Gripen is NATO compatible and globally interoperable meeting the most demanding operational requirements and has now accumulated well over 100,000 flight hours. A two-seat version of the Gripen, which retains the full operational capability of the single-seater, is also available for tactical weapons training, more specialized missions and type conversion. |

The world’s most agile fighter for close combat. A combination of advanced aerodynamic layout utilizing a combined close-coupled canard – delta configuration and a triplex, digital Fly-By-Wire Flight Control System (FCS) leads to a winning Dog-Fight capability.
Saab ultimately selected a delta wing-canard design with relaxed stability. The configuration provides for a high manoeuvrability along with better takeoff and landing performance. The Gripen also has a low drag, enabling it to fly faster, have increased range, and carry a larger payload. The totally integrated avionics make it a "programmable" aircraft, changing the software can provide for additional mission profiles. The Gripen was designed to provide for a fast sink rate and hard, short landings. |

A fully integrated avionic mission system operating on five 1553B digital data bus highways. This provides total sensor fusion resulting in enhanced combat capability guaranteeing precision delivery of smart weapons. A combination of low radar, IR and visual signatures, along with the long range PS05 multimode radar and sensor fusion, including world leading new generation weapon integration, ensure a high kill ratio in long range engagements. |

The JAS 39 Gripen is powered by a RM12 Engine supplied by Volvo Aero, is a development of the GE F404 engine from General Electric. A digital engine control system automatically monitors the engine parameters and switches on the back-up systems if required. A condition monitoring system registers the flight data.The JAS 39 The Gripen can fly at a maximum speed of 2,470km/h. The combat radius and ferry range of the aircraft are 800km and 3,200km respectively. Its service ceiling is 15,240m. The aircraft weighs around 5,700kg and its maximum take-off weight is 14,000kg.

Feedback from recent conflicts has confirmed that operational requirements are changing. Users of airborne platforms have also recognized this trend and are themselves imposing appropriate demands on equipment and systems suppliers. Users no longer want a specific aircraft for each operational role. They require a multi-role platform that is capable of undertaking all roles (Air-to-Air, Air-to-Ground, maritime strike and reconnaissance). Gripen has been developed to meet a wide range of operational requirements which include a variety of missions. The multi-role capability of Gripen and its ability to change roles in the air at the press of a button results in a unique swing-role, multi-mission flexibility.
To fulfill the various missions that Gripen could be asked to undertake, the fighter has a variety of stores integrated and freedom of choice when it comes to the nationality of the weapons supplier. The customer has the choice to match Gripen together with stores from the United States of America, Europe and other regions of the world, or from indigenous suppliers. The internally mounted 27mm Mauser high-energy gun can operate in an automatic radar-guided aiming mode. The stand-off dispenser is the DWF39 from EADS (formerly DaimlerChrysler Aerospace) and Bofors. The Bofors ARAK 70 rocket pod is cleared for carriage on the Gripen. |
