The Mi-24V/Mi-35 "Hind-E" (export variant) (NATO reporting name: Hind) is a multirole combat helicopter with low-capacity troop transport manufactured by the Russian company Rostverol. It is the result of more than 45 years of research and development, since the first flight of the prototype in 1969. The Mi-24V/Mi-35 entered production in 1976, and nearly 1.500 had been built in Arsenyev and Rostov by 1986.
The Mi-24V/Mi-35 is intended for a comprehensive range of missions, such as the destruction of armoured vehicles, armed support of land forces, paratroop deployement and casualty evacuation, as well as transportation of supplies and equipment, both in the cargo compartment and on an external sling. The Mi-24V/Mi-35 is currently in use in Russia (, Azerbaijan (24 Mi-35M variant), Iraq (6+), Nigeria (7), Venezuela (10 Mi-35M2 variant), Mexico and Brazil (12 Mi-35M4 variant). |

Design | ||||||||||||||||||||||
The core of the aircraft was derived from the Mil Mi-8 (NATO reporting name "Hip") with two top-mounted turboshaft engines driving a mid-mounted 17.3 m five-blade main rotor and a three-blade tail rotor. The engine configuration gave the aircraft its distinctive double air intake. Original versions have an angular greenhouse-style cockpit; Model D and later have a characteristic tandem cockpit with a "double bubble" canopy. Other airframe components came from the Mi-14 "Haze". Two mid-mounted stub wings provide weapon hardpoints, each offering three stations, in addition to providing lift. The Mi-24V/Mi-35 has an overall length of 17.51 m, a wingspan of 6.66 m, a height of 4.4 m and a rotor diameter of 17.3 m.
The assault version can carry up to 8 fully equipped troopers in cargo compartment. In transport variant, the Mi-24V/Mi-35 can perform transportation of cargoes weighing up to 1,500 kg inside the cargo compartment and up to 2,400 kg on an external sling. The medical version of the Mi-35 can carry 2 laying and 2 sitting casualties with one medical attendant. |

Propulsion
|
||||||||||||||||||||||
The Mi-35 helicopter is powered by two Isotov TV3-117VMA turboshaft engines, developing 2,200shp each (1,600 kw). The air intakes are fitted with deflectors and separators to prevent dust particle ingestion when taking off from unprepared sites. An auxiliary power unit is fitted. The internal fuel capacity is 1,337kg (2,947 lb), with an additional 1,000kg in an auxiliary tank in the cabin or 1,200kg on four external tanks. The fuel tanks were filled with explosion-suppression polyurethane foam, and extra valves were introduced in the hydraulic system to prevent total loss of hydraulic fluid in the event of damage. The tail rotor control rods were spaced wider apart to stop them from being shot away by a single round.

Avionics
|

The most recent Mi-24V/Mi-35 variant have a digital PNK-24 avionics suite and electronic multifunction LCD cockpit displays, and Geofizika ONV1 night-vision goggles, along with NVG-compatible cockpit lighting. They are fitted with the Urals Optical and Mechanical Plant GOES-342 TV/FLIR sighting system. The Mi-35 is also equipped with GLONASS/NAVSTAR satellite navigation system equipment, onboard computer and jam-proof communications means.
New communications equipment has been fitted on the Mi-35 version, as indicated by two new aerials on the tailboom: a dorsal blade aerial for the R-863 VHF radio and a ventral ‘towel rail’ aerial for the R-828 radio for communication with ground troops. The SRO-2M Khroni IFF was replaced by the SRO-1P Parol (Password) transponder, aka izdeliye 62-01, with characteristic triangular red blade aerials. The Mi-35 is a highly-protected rotorcraft, the countermeasures suite includes a RLS radar illumination warning station, Confusion Relections Dispensing, a laser range finder and a location finder, chaff and flare launch system, infrared (IR) jamming system and engine-exhaust IR suppressor. Triple-lobe air/exhaust mixers called EVU could be fitted to reduce the helicopters IR signature. After mixing the exhaust with cool outside air they directed it upwards into the main rotor downwash, reducing exhaust gas temperature by 350-400 ®C (662-752 deg F). The modernised avionics suite of the Hind-E ensures implementation of round-the-clock battlefield surveillance, nap-of-the-earth flight missions with visual observation of the underlying terrain, take-off and landing on unprepared sites, air reconnaissance with target location and designation, as well as engagement of ground and air targets within the entire combat range of the helicopter. |
