The An-70 is a four-engine medium-range military transport aircraft designed and manufactured by the Ukrainian aviation Company Antonov. The AN-70 aircraft belongs to a new generation of the short takeoff and landing tactical military medium transports. AN-70 is extremely required by army. This aircraft is capable of solving qualitatively new tasks beyond possibilities of previous military transports. It was proved by the wide programme of the Joint State Russian Ukrainian tests, main part of which had been completed. AN-70 can transport almost any item of aeromobile military and engineering vehicles used by armies of the world and to deliver them to poorly-equipped unpaved runways directly to the destination. On this ability, AN-70 surpasses all the existent airplanes. The development of An-70 began in the 1990s and the first prototype was rolled out in January 1994. Antonov launched the second prototype in December 1996 and its maiden flight took place in April 1997. The prototype was showcased at the Moscow Air Show in August 1997. On 24 June 2010 Lt. Gen. Vladimir Shamanov stated that he had ordered 60 An-70s for his service in accordance with the new rearmament program for 2011–2020. Then, it was reported in early March 2011 that Russia planned to receive 60 aircraft of a redesigned version in the 2015–2016 timeframe. The first aircraft sold to the Russian Air Force. The Ukrainian Air Force ordered five An-70 aircraft in November 2005. The fuselage of the first serial production aircraft was completed in December 2012. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2013. |

Design | ||||||||||||||||||||||
The An-70 is a high-wing monoplane with four wing-mounted propfan engines, it has a full glass cockpit and fly-by-wire controls. The aircraft has a 19.1 metre (22.4 metre with the ramp) x 4 metre x 4.1 metre cargo space and can carry 47 ton of cargo. The airframe is constructed with composite materials to reduce the overall weight of the aircraft by 20% to 30%. Onboard aerial delivery system ensures autonomous loading/unloading of a wide variety of cargoes and their air dropping. The onboard loading equipment comprises four overhead rail electric motor hoists with total cargo lifting capacity of 12 t, two onboard electric winches each with a 1.5-ton tractive force.

Avionics | ||||||||||||||||||||||
The AN-70 is fitted with modern electronic equipment and systems of fully digital control. The AN-70 is competitive enough as for the airframe and power pant characteristics as well as airborne system. The first production AN-70s constructed at ANTONOV Serial Plant will have modern configuration of electronic equipment. Onboard monitoring and diagnostic systems make possible the autonomous operation of the AN-70 aircraft from poorly equipped airfields without the need for any special ground facilities. Aircraft maintenance is based on the “on-condition” strategy. The integrated digital complex of onboard equipment provides operation of the aircraft in all latitudes, all and around-the-clock, in VFR and adverse weather conditions, flights over unmarked terrain, protection against antiaircraft means, formation flying, takeoff and landing on unequipped unpaved airfields. Use of equipment with multiplex channels of data exchange makes it possible to easily modify and adapt the onboard avionics structure to suit any version.

Propulsion | ||||||||||||||||||||||
The AN-70 is powered by four Progress D-27 propfan engines, each turning a pair of contra-rotating scimitar propellers. Each engine can produce 10,350kW of output power. FADEC compatible, the D-27 engine is fitted with two remote gearboxes, a single stage compressor, a four stage low pressure turbine and a jetpipe.

Missions | ||||||||||||||||||||||
AN-70 can perform the typical transport mission (transportation of 20 t payload at a range of 3000 km) from unpaved airfield of 600-800 m length only. There is no other airplane with such ability. Taking into account all likely possibilities it is possible to come to conclusion that the AN-70 STOL capabilities as much as twice reduce both the number of aircraft required for the mission and the cost of the operation. According to the design estimations, AN-70 can be operated from/to elevated airfields placed at altitudes up to 3000 m over sea level. In comparison with the analogues aircraft, the AN-70 can perform air dropping of cargoes and parachutists with twice less scatter and its crew can guide the aircraft to the calculated touchdown point with a pin-point accuracy.
