Description

Unveiled on February 17, 2024, the Iranian-made Azarakhsh air defense missile system exemplifies the capabilities of a Transporter Erector Launcher and Radar (TELAR) system. It combines high agility with advanced detection and engagement capabilities, making it a formidable asset in Iran's defense strategy against low-altitude threats. The system is engineered for rapid deployment and offers comprehensive 360-degree coverage by integrating radar and electro-optical tracking systems. This allows the Azarakhsh to be highly effective in various combat scenarios.

The Azarakhsh air defense system is designed to provide formidable protection against aerial threats, leveraging both its radar and electro-optical systems for accurate detection and tracking. Its modular design allows it to be mounted on various vehicles, enabling quick deployment and operation from any location. The combination of a phased array radar and an infrared imaging system allows the Azarakhsh to detect and engage targets with precision and efficiency.

The Azarakhsh missile system is characterized by its "fire-and-forget" capability, which enables it to engage targets without requiring further guidance after launch. The missile features an infrared search and track (IRST) system, enhancing its target engagement abilities. Notably, the Azarakhsh missile has been adapted from air-to-air to surface-to-air usage, with modifications to its infrared search and track system to suit its new role.

Technical Data

  • Armament

The Azarakhsh air defense missile system is armed with the Azarakhsh missile, often referred to as the Iranian Sidewinder. This short-range, infrared-guided missile has been adapted for surface-to-air use, boasting a fire-and-forget capability that makes it highly effective against fast-moving aerial targets. The Azarakhsh air defense missile is equipped with a weapon station mounted at the rear of the truck, featuring four Azarakhsh surface-to-air missiles ready to fire. With a length of 3000 mm, a diameter of 127 mm, and a total weight of 70 kg, the Azarakhsh missile is designed to deliver precise and powerful strikes against enemy threats. It carries a 4.5 kg high-explosive fragmentation (HE-Frag) warhead, providing a maximum range of 10 km and reaching speeds of up to Mach 1.8.

  • Design and protection

The Azarakhsh air defense missile system is mounted on an Iranian-made light truck. The truck features a crew cab at the front and a weapon station at the rear flatbed. This weapon station includes the missile, along with all necessary radar and firing systems. Its modular structure supports integration onto various vehicles, enhancing tactical versatility. The system is engineered for all-weather operation, capable of performing effectively regardless of weather conditions or time of day. Additionally, it can be linked with other Iranian air defense systems to create a networked defense, further bolstering its protective capabilities.

  • Mobility

The Azarakhsh is mounted on a 4x4 light truck, offering exceptional mobility and rapid deployment capabilities. This setup enables the system to be strategically positioned and swiftly respond to emerging threats. Although specific details about the engine are not disclosed, it is likely powered by a diesel engine, providing the necessary speed and agility for quick relocation and repositioning. The high mobility of the Azarakhsh system allows it to traverse various terrains and operate in diverse environments, making it a versatile component of Iran's air defense strategy.

  • Combat Equipment

The Azarakhsh system is equipped with advanced onboard combat equipment, ensuring effective target detection, tracking, and engagement. It features a passive phased array radar capable of 360-degree coverage, with a detection range of 50 km, providing comprehensive target acquisition capabilities. In addition to its radar system, the Azarakhsh incorporates electro-optical and infrared systems with a tracking range of 25 km, offering enhanced target detection and tracking even in challenging conditions.

The missile launchers of the Azarakhsh system are configured to carry four ready-to-launch Azarakhsh missiles. The missiles are guided by an infrared search and track (IRST) system, enabling them to engage targets within a 6-kilometer range effectively. The integration of these systems allows the Azarakhsh to detect, track, and engage multiple targets simultaneously, providing a reliable defense against low-altitude aerial threats.
